MISS GRACE GEORGE TO BE HOLIDAY STAR Chief in Support of Star in ‘The Road to Rome’ at English’s Next Week Will Be McKay Morris, Well Known Here as a Stuart Walker Player. The announcement of the appearance of Miss Grace George in the New York comfedy success, “The Road to Rome,” beginning Monday, Dec. 26, at English’s, is of untold interest to all theatergoers who appreciate the best in acting and the 6ner subtleties of dramatic art. Indeed, Miss George’s appearance in a highly modernized depiction of a classic Roman role, following her long line of
dramatic creations running the gamut of stage potrayal, is sure to arouse great interest. Becomingly she •will don the flowing robes of ancient Rome and thereby enhance the comeliness that helped to commend her at the outset of her notable stage career. In the new play its author, Robert Emmet Sherwood, editor of Life, has departed from the beaten track and the result is said to be a work novel In its avoidance of conventions, tickling in its humor, pleasing in .'.entiment and boldly defiant in dealing with historic characters. The hero is Hannibal, that Carthaginian general, who invaded and ravaged Italy during the second Punic war. It is in his contact with some of the Romans, particularly with the wife of Fabius, that furnishes the incentive for talk and action. In its ironical and satirical flings at the futility of war and in its assumption that woman is the aggressor in wooing man, the play has a Shavian flavor that should stimulate interest in it. In the dialogue the author does toot describe a Roman atmosphere of the classic period. Instead, his characters speak in a very modem manner and In their frankness Often are as bold as may be encountered in a Broadway show. Altogether, the play is said to be bo human In the blending of gravity
