BALKY MEMBER BROUGHT G. 0. P. LOSSINSENATE Vermont Man Got Revenge by Swinging Posts to Insurgents. BY BAY TUCKER WASHINGTON, Dec. 23.—Porter H. Dale, President Coolidge’s own senator from Vermont, was responsible for the situation that forced G. O. P. leaders to give important committee assignments to Senate insurgents, it was learned today. The rebellious group, which holds the balance of power in almost every worth-while committee, was not placed in control because the Old Guard wanted it, but because President Coolidge’s neighbor took this opportunity to get even for several slights Imposed on him by administration spokesmen. Held Key Position It was his stubborn refusal to accept the chairmanship of Public Lands and Surveys Committee that forced the leaders to turn this post over to Senator Nye of North Dakota, who is not only a first-year fledgling, but also an insurgent. As it turned out, Dale was the key man of the whole Senate reorganization. Had he given up his Civil Service Committee chairmanship for that on public lands and surveys, skilful juggling of committee assignments might have retained absolute control in the hands of the regulars. Seniority rules had left Dale and Nye as ranking members on public lands, with the Vermonter eligible for the chairmanship first. But Dale refused to quit his civil service post, thus leaving the other committee to Nye. Watson Begs Acceptance With tears in his eyes, “Jim” Watson of Indiana of the Hules Committee begged Dale to take the public lands chairmanship so that Nye would not get it. To western interests this committee is of great importance; it was the one that conducted the famous Teapot Dome investigation. But the Vermonter would not budge. He probably recalled that when he entered the Senate, the only assignment he craved was membership on banking and currency. The leaders laughed at his request, Watson among them, and gave him a grievance. He also remembered the Administration’s abortive attempt to oppose his re-election in 1926 with a man closer to the President politically. “We’ll give you banking and currency—anything you want” offered Watson, as he painted a gloomy picture of insurgency rampant and victorious. Dale refused. DOG IN DIVORCE FIGHT Crippled Woman Wants Pet Now Held by Blind Husband. B v Times Special KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 23. Puzzle-Head Rules Puzzle-Head rules are simple. Read them before starting to play this fascinating new game that permits you to twist the news of the day into all sorts of funny shapes. It’s fun and" there are cash prizes for winners. 1. Pick out the “No. 3 head lines” in today’s Times. They are marked with this line under them: “No. 3 Head—See Puzzle.” 2. On a plain sheet of paper write out your list of PUZZLE HEADS. Write each PUZZLE HEAD in two lines, like a No. 3 head. 3. PUZZLE-HEADS are made by placing one line of one No. 3 head with another line of another No. 3 head, so that the combination makes sense. 4. You can use th#same line more than once—as often as it can be placed in combination with another line and make sense. 5. Make your list humorous; as long as possible, and neat. It will be judged on this basis. 6. Do not change the order of words in a line or the words themselves—use the line as it is printed. 7. Write your name and address on your list and either mail it to Puzzle-Head Ted, The Times, 214-20 W. Maryland St., or drop it in the box provided for your convenience in The Times’ office. 8.
