MISS TAWNEY APPLE GOES OUT SHOPPIN’ Hoosier Humorist Issues a New Batch of Skunk Ridge Papers to Make the World a Happier Place in Which to Live. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN Miss Tawney Apple has gone shoppin’ agin and this time she “bought a pair o’ cotton stockin’s.” And what fer? you ask. And the answer comes back “t’ drain cottage cheese through.” Anyway that’s Kin Hubbard’s statement in “Abe Martin’s Wise Cracks and Skunk Ridge Papers” just published by The Abe Martin Publishing Company of Indianapolis.

Abe Martin of Brown County, Indiana, has become a national institution and Abe has made Kin Hubbard a welcomed guest in book form in many a home. I like to read Kin Hubbard’s books when I get into a mental rut, when the world to me gets too matter of fact and when I take on a crazy idea to improve the philosophy of the family Bible. A man needs something when he

believe anything has gone up like th’ dime novel, some o’ which sell for $3.” That helps me get back my vision and puts a laugh into the ordeal of reading so much of the new stuff called fiction. These “wisecracks” are good mental food. Abe is Hoosier bom and reared and he has the right to be considered a good old wise man of this city. And so I recommend Kin Hubbard’s new book which he has dedicated to another great Hoosier— Meredith Nicholson. Some Poetry The question often is—How old is that poetry? Generally the question is rightly placed but as often it is just the reverse. I do not rebel against modern poetry when it is poetry and when it has lyric and spiritual value. Or again when it honestly reflects life. v The late Charles R. Williams wrote some religious poems before his death and they have been gathered together and published by The Bobbs-Merrill Company under the title of “The Return of the Prodip*! and Other Religious Poems.” The chief poem of course is the “prodigal.” Here we find lyric

For example these few lines sing to me: “So. unto the poor He came. Without favour, without fear. Winning them from 6tn and shame With His message of good cheer.’ This-is not difficult to remember and I am quite sure that the beauty of these few lines will come to me in even greater meaning on this Christmas morning. In his “A Christmas Carol,” Williams has again expressed the thoughts he had of a beautiful occasion. There is lots of beauty, hope and thought contained in this little book of verse. * m u Indianapolis theaters today offer: “The Girl From Chicago” at the Indiana; “Tea For Three” at the Apollo; “No Place to Go” at the Ohio; “High Fliers” at the Mutual; Solly Ward and company at Keith’s; Billy Goldie Revue at the Lyric; “Get Your Man”, at the Circle, and movies at the Isis.
