COMEDY STARS TO ANNOUNCE DODGEON AIR Rogers, Whiteman, Fred Stone and Jolson to Broadcast Jan. 4. Will Rogers, Fred Stone, Paul Whiteman and A1 Jolson in four different comers of America will be broadcast to the entire / United States, by Dodge Brothers for one hour, Jan., 10:30 to 11:30 o’clock in what is the greatest mechanical achievement in radio telephony ever attempted and probably the costliest radio program yet given. The program utilizing the facilities of the National Broadcasting Company, and American Telephone and Telegraph Company will be the initial step by Dodge Brothers in an extensive advertising program, heralding the Victory, anew six cylinder car embodying new principles of motor construction. Will Rogers, as master of ceremonies, will broadcast from Hollywood, Fred Stone from Chicago, Paul Whiteman and his band from New/York, and A1 Jolson from New Orleans, in a linkup of thirtythree broadcasting stations made possible by most intricate engineering with special telephonic circuits and the use of over 12,009 miles of telephone wire. From an engineering standpoint, according to officials of the American and Telegraph Company, the feat entails the overcoming of tremendous difficulties. Three transcontinental circuits will be utilized, one to serve the thirty-three broadcasting stations, one to transmit the programs of the various performers to New York where in turn they will be distributed to the broadcasting station circuit, and the third to be used for emergency purposes in case weather conditions affect the second circuit. Hundreds of engineers will be at work on these three lines, both prior to and during the broadcasting more than 200 men operating broadcasting stations in the hookup will be at work at stations throughout the country. Running parallel with the broadcasting circuits will be thousands of gmles of wire lines utilizing telegraphic communications in order to transmit orders to engineers at work along the circuit. More than 30,000,000 persons scattered throughout the United States will tune in on this program, according to the estimate of M. H. Anylesworth, president of the National Broadcasting Company.
COTTON BEST CORD Fisk Dealer/ Says Highest Quality Essential. "The test of a tire cord is its wearing quality and ability to stand constant flexing. For this use, cotton cord rdgns supreme, after comparative tests against all other textile materials,” says O. J. Conrad, of the Factory Supply and Tire Company, local Fisk Tire dealer. "The cords must possess the greatest resistance to the constant weaving and flexing that come from inequalitits in the road, which will soon break down any but the toughest, most flexible material; in fact, any cord except a cotton cord. Manufacturers take extreme precautions to preserve the flexibility of the fibre whictf enables the cotton cord to lend enduring strength to the modern balloon tires.” If you take two wires of the same thickness, but of different materials, and bend them repeatedly between the nands, one will flex many times without apparent harm', while the other will break after a few bends. “In daily service” Conrad concludes, "cords in a tire are sub-jected-to the strains as the wire you bend between your hands. So, cotton, though not renowned for tensile strength, possesses the only fibers durable and flexible enough to give strength.” Auto Industry Big Steel User The automotive industry during 1926 used 14 per cent of the iron and steel produced in this country, 50 per cent of the plate glass, 63 per cent of the upholstery leather, 11 per cent of the hardwood lumber, 25 per cent of the aluminum, 13 per cent of the copper. 85 pei cent of the rubber and 80 per cent of the gasoline.

BY SWEDE SWANSON THOMAS R. FREEBODY, vice president of the Motor Truck Association, enumerates three kinds of automotive “pests” that to him and many others are obnoxious and dangerous in our streets. These are the horn-blowing pests. First, says Freeoody, is the “showoff,” who wants to let the world know he’s driving a flashy roadster and has lost his manners in doing so. Second, there’s the employed driver who wants to get to his destination in a hurry and has no consideration for others. His hornblowing is more to divert abuse to the injured party than to himself. Lastly, there is the nervous driver, who Freebody believes is most dangerous of all. He toots his horn at all times, whenever his imagination gets the worst of him. Coolness and restraint are essentials for good driving. Nervousness suggests a fear complex. which, if pushed, too far on the highway, may be taken up by others, like a fastspreading disease. A slight touch of the horn button is enough to let the fellow ahead know you want to pass. No end of blowing will get you ahead, however, if the traffic is heavy. The best that can be done when traffic is heavy is to ride along with it. Horn-blowing is useless and troublesome. m m u A man In Southampton, England, has equipped his walking stick witn a motor horn. Before crossing the street he sounds his horn, attracts the attention of the motorists ana crosses the street in safety.

2 NEW SALES ZONES FORMED RY CHEVROLET Better Arrangements Are Made for Handling Increased Auto Business. Widespread changes in its field personnel, creation of new sales zones and regions and establishment of better facilities for handling fleet and commercial car business were announced today by the Chevrolet Motor Company. Outstanding in the new arrangement are two new sales zones, one at Detroit, Mich., and the other at Knoxville, Tenn., and the creation of two new-regions, one with headquarters at Atlanta, Ga., and the other at Dallas, Texas. These changes will bring the factory organization into closer touch with the dealers and will enable the latter to provide better service, quicker delivery and generally improved facilities for the public. The new Detroit zone was established Dec. 1, under the direction of A. H. Goodman, formerly Detroit city sales manager, while the Knoxville zone will be established Jan. 1, with J. E. Johnson of the central office as sales manager. These will bring the total number of zone sales offices in the United States to fortyfive, ten of which were established this year. New Office at Atlanta In the new regional divisions territory formerly making up three regions has been reapportioned into five regions. This change resulted, factory officials explained, because the growth of business in the regional regions exceeded the normal volume. Under the new plan, the former Southeastern region, with headquarters at Norwood, Ohio, is renamed the Mid-East region. It remains under the sales managership of A. F. Young and comprises the Norwood, Indianapolis. Louisville, Knoxville and Charleston, W. Va. sales zones. The new region at Atlanta takes the same Southeastern region and will be under L. S. Costley, formerly assistant to Young, and embraces the Atlanta, Birmingham, Jacksonville, Columbia and Charlotte zones which formerly were a part of the region at Norwood. # In the Middle West region with offices at St. Louis under A. W. L. Gilpin, the Denver zone is being transferred from the Pacific Coast region to the Middle West region, while the Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and Oklahoma City zones are transferred from the Middle West region to form the new Southwestern region with headquarters at Dallas under Felix Doran, Jr., formerly assistant to Mr. Gilpin. The Southwest region also takes over the El Paso zone from the Pacific coast region. Rapid Growth in Sales With these changes effective, the total number of regions is increased from six to eight. Those unaffected are the Great Lakes region with
headquarters at Chicago, the Flint region at Flint, Mich., and the Atlantic Coast region at Tarrytown, N. Y. The following changes in zone sales managerships also were made Dec. 1: F. H. Knight went from the home office to the Richmond (Va.) zone to succeed E. E. Jones; C. P. Fisken, formerly sales manager of the Janesville zone goes to Indian-
