B.U United Pres* LONDON, Dec. 21.—The cold wave sweeping Europe has taken a toll of at least fifty-nine lives with the possibility that deaths from blizzards, extreme cold and storms at sea might mount to 100. Thirty-two persons are dead In Jugo-Slavia, fifteen in a mine that collapsed due to a sudden drop in temperature and seventeen among soldiers on guard along the Chev-gell-Demikapu railroad. Ten deaths in Great Britain were attributed to the coldest weather since 1895,' while seven were reported in Paris. Five sailors went down with the schooner Pearl, wrecked off Kinsale, Ireland. Sub-zero temperatures were recorded throughout the British Isles and the continent. Ice Amazes Rome Six miners, rescued from entombment when the Kruschevo Bauxite mine, in Jugoslavia, collapsed from extreme cold, died in a hospital. Nineothers were killed outright. Half of historic St. Peter’s Square, in sunny Rome, was converted into the first skating pond the children there ever had seen. High winds carried jets of water from the fountains to the right half of the square. Thousands of children enjoyed themselves by making slides. None had skates, however, for there had been no ice in Rome in their memory. In the English channel heavy gales delayed shipping, both crosschannel and trans-Atlantic. Many ships were forced to seek shelter in harbors. Several sailing shins have foundered in the Black Sea. Intense Cold in Germany Four persons died in northern Greece because of the cold, which is extraordinarily severe, while a girl was frozen to death in a snowdrift at Varna, Bulgaria. SENATOR JONES OF NEW MEXICO DIES SUDDENLY Member of Congress Since 1916; Successor May Be Republican. Bj/ United Pres* WASHINGTON, Dec. 21.—Senator Andrieus Jones, senior Senator from New Mexico, died at 11:15 o'clock last night in his apartment in the Meridian Mansions here. He was 65 years old. His ailment was angina pectoris. His death probably will result in giving the Republicans a majority of one in the Senate. Senator Jones was a Democrat. Yesterday the Senator received visitors and chatted with them. A heavy cold he contracted recently was believed to have hastened the end. The body was taken to a funeral parlor and arrangements for burial were to be made today. It was believed likely' a senatorial escort would accompany the casket to New Mexico.
