BEGIN HEBE TODAY When Diana Parwell’* mother overhears talk of love between her daughter and a schoolboy friend, she is fearful that Diana will “go wrong" like her sister, Vivian, who ran away from home four years before. So the mother hastens a marriage of Diana with Arthur Vane, some years older a successful San Francisco lawyer. . . Diana is only 18 and goes into marriage believing "Arthur Is so different from other men he will always be satisfied with merely spiritual love.” He respects her reserve, at first, as a young girl’s natural shyness, but after months of loveless wedded life, he tells her she has wrecked his life. Some time after her mothr dies. Diana leaves Arthur and finds her long-lost sisfcr, Vivian, preparing for a trip to New York. Diana rents a room at the home of Mrs. Burton. widowed friend of Diana’s mother, and enrolls in Seton's School of Acting. Within a few months she has progressed so well with her school work she is taken by Shepherd Seton. head of the school, as his personal pupil. He arouses in her, in the Impassioned love scenes they rehearse together, sensations she has never had before. , Diana falls passionately in love with Seton. Arthur refuses to divorce her. Seton’s wife goes East for six weeks and Diana notices a coolness in his attitude toward her. x „ . Vivian returns to San Francisco and disapproves of Diana living with Nadine in an apartment paid for by Jim Devlin. Seton. after inviting her to dinner, says he may not be able to go. Diana admits to Vivian that she is in love with Seton. Devlin sees Nadine out with a young man, and demands that she give him up. Diana tells Nadine to give up Jim, go to work and move with her into a furnished room. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY

CHAPTER XLV TP you’ve been used to it all A your life it should be easier for you,” Diana said firmly. “You don’t know anyhting about it!” cried Nadine. “You’ve never been without the price of silk stockings.” Nadine was sobbing bitterly, but there was no wavering in her decision. “It’s no use. Diana. You’ve no idea what it means to do without things. I can’t do it. I won’t do it, and that settles it.” "All right,” Diana answered with considerably lessened sympathy. “Then there’s nothing I can do.” Long after she had retired Nadine’s sobs continued in the living room. But Diana decided she couldn’t have cared so very much. Because nothing in the world could have made her give up her lover. The next day, however, it became apparent that Seton was renouncing her.” His manner was exceedingly professional. More formal than it had been in the beginning. Diana, making an effort to be magnanimous and not hold the broken engagement against him, found him strangely indifferent. Her

DIANA?

forced cheerfulness turned into reserve, her reserve to coldness, her coldness to despair. She felt like a penny candy ball, which in the process of childish mastication changes from pink to white to a deep licorice black. Every night she went to bed so shrouded in gloom that her heart was a dragging weight. Only Seton could lighten it. A word from him could have made her happy again. But it was withheld. And she began to be *fraid to go to sleep. She was so sure to dream of him. . . . She discovered that while a girl may cry romantically over almost any man at midnight, there is only one who causes her to waken to a sunshiny morning with tears on her cheeks. The knowledge reminded her of Vivian’s warning. He was already hurting her. Causing definite, physical pain. ... By the end of a week her despair had flashed into resentment. How dared he make love to her, then ignore it?—so cheap!—that he could win her affection, then toss it lightly aside? She wanted then to hurt him, to see him wince. And she began to fling out at him with pointed, sharp remarks. When he attempted to discuss “Mona Vanna” she shrugged indifferent shoulders. When he confided in anew scheme he had in mind for advertising, she said, “Yes, that’s very nice,” in much the tone her mother would have used. She saw from his astonished face that he had been wounded by those little poisoned darts, and she told herself she was glad. She hoped he would suffer horribly. Yet she was really sick with remorse. It would have been impossible for her to hurt him as he did her. The first of December found her alone in a plainly furnished, one-

room apartment. She had selected It herself, but Vivian had approved it. “I suppose it will do for a while. But I’d ratl\er see you in a private home.” “Nothing doing,” Diana said flatly. “I have to have a place where I can practice without worrying about the effects on the rest of the family.” “Well, you don’t expect Shepard Seton to come here, do you?” Vivian asked in the dictatorial manner Diana particularly disliked- “ Don’t worry,” she answered bitterly. “He’ll never come anywhere to see me. That’s over.” Vivian did not seem surprised. “Best thing in the world for both of you,” she announced cheerfully. “Maybe you can get down to work now and get something done.” Her tone roused Diana’s suspicion. “Vivian, you didn’t say anything to him? You wouldn’t do that?” “I might if I thought it necessary,” Vivian admitted. Diana’s eyes blazed. “If you did I’ll never forgive you. No wonder he’s acted so queer. It’s your fault.” Vivian shrugged. “What did you say to him?” Diana demanded. "I didn’t say I said anything. He’s probably thought It over and decided things were going too far . I Diana did not believe that. She was positive Vivian had interfered. And the idea diverted her anger from Seton to her sister. But Vivian admitted nothing. Diana’s fury left her unmoved. “You’ll get over it,” she said unsympathetically. “You’ll find there are plenty of men in the world jUst as fascinating as Shepherd seton. Although I will admit he’s deadly. But why shouldn’t he be? Look at the experience he’s had.” She seemed to know what she was talking about. “Os course, it’s nothing to you,” Diana blazed. “I can give him up.

Sure! Because he’s my lover. But if he happened to be yours!” “Don’t be silly,” advised the beautiful one. But Diana could see she had frightened her. “I’m going to ask him pointblank if you’ve said anything,” she threatened. “And admit you’ve told me about it?” There was something to that. Seton had expressly cautioned her not to tell her sister. “I’ve nothing More to lose,” Diana declared. “And if 1 find out that you have interfered I’ll do anything —anything—to get him back.” The ruse worked. Vivian was on her feet. Her voice was at its high-’ est. “Are you crazy?” “Stop right there,” Diana interrupted enough. “From now on I’m playing my own game and telling you absolutely nothing.” Tears and protests availed Vivian nothing. Her complacency was shattered before she left. She was

pleading, “Diana, please don’t do anything you’re going to be sorry for.” But Diana promised nothing. And her sister had scarcely left the apartment before she was telephoning. Cautiously! Having learned that lesson! “Mr. Seton, this is Diana. It is necessary for me to see you for a little while.” “Are you at home?” “Yes,” she answered quietly. But she was trembling..,.
