WORLD'S FAIR ON ENORMOUS SCALEBOOMED *Big Bill* Thompson Pushing Vast Project for 1933 in Chicago. By EDWIN L. RECKLEIt Polled Press Staff Corresnondent CHICAGO, Dec. 16. —A second world’s fair, which will make the original Chicago exposition thirtyfive years ago seem a small undertaking, is being planned for 1933. In organization of the project, observers see one of the greatest coups for Mayor William Hale Thompson m his kaleidoscopic career. The proposal is to construct the fair buildings on a chain of artificial islands along six miles of lake front. Most of the “made” land on which the structures will rest has to be filled in within the next five years. Construction of the fair buildings will come later. Magnitude of the project would discourage a person less bold than Mayor Thompson. It probably would discourage Big Bill if he were mayor of a city other than Chicago. But he is looking upon the project as a matter of course and calmly points out that Lake Michigan “is only thirty-five feet deep for a mile out” and can be filled in in many places. Hundreds of acres of lake frontage already have been reclaimed in this way over a period of years. The cost of the project can not be estimated. The most talked of figure is $20,000,000, but many persons connected with plans for the fair insist that this would be merely a starter. Twenty millions will be necessary to complete the preliminary financing of the exposition and all

of it must come from Chicago. The Chicago South Park board, a State organization which constructed Soldiers’ Field Stadium, will build the islands, independently of the fair project. Thompson has succeeded in obtaining the services of one of the shrewdest financiers in Chicago to direct the fair committee—Rufus J. Dawes, brother of the Vice President. The wealthiest men in the city, civic organizations and politicians of all complexions will cooperate.
