BEGIN HERE TODAY When Diana Farwell's mother overhears talk of love between her daughter and a schoolboy friend, she Is fearful that Diana will “go wrong” like her sister, Vivian, who ran away from home four years before. So the mother hastens a marriage of Diana witn Arthur Vane, some years older, a successful San Francisco lawyer. Diana Is only 18 and goes into marriage believing “Arthur Is so different from other men he always will be satisfied with merely spiritual love." He respects her reserve, at first, as a young girl’s natural shyness. But, after months of loveless wedded life, he tells her she has wrecked his life. Some time after her mother dies, Diana leaves Arthur and finds her long-lost sister, Vivian, preparing for a trip to New York. Diana rents a room at the home of Mrs. Burton, widowed friend of Diana's mother, and enrolls in Seton’s School of Acting. Within a few ..months she has progressed so well with her school work che Is taken by Shepherd Seton. head of the school, as his personal pupil. He arouses in her, in the Impassioned love scenes they rehearse together, sensations she has never had before. Diana falls passionately In love with Seton. Arthur refuses to divorce her. Seton's wife goes East for six weeks, and Diana notices a coolness in his attitude toward her. Vivian returns to San Francisco and disapproves of Diana's living with Nadine in an apartment paid for by Jim . Devlin. Seton, after Inviting her to dinner, says he may not be able to go. Diana admits to Vivian that she is in love with Seton. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER XLIV DIANA had not supposed Vivian could look like that. All the charming softness was wiped from her face, leaving it strained and hard. And, at first, Diana reacted precisely as she had to her mother’s hysteria. Her heart suffocated her. Why had she attempted to confide in her sister? She might have known that Vivian would never see her side of it With an unconscious gesture of aversion she turned away. Vivian seized her arm, demanding. “Promise you’ll break with him. Immediately! Before it goes any further.’’ The old line! But Diana was determined not to be coerced by such methods again. She knew now how little these threats were worth. “I’ll promise nothing of the kind,” she retorted. “You can’t bully me, Vivian. And there’s no use to try.” Vivian began to cry. “Diana, you’re such a baby. Life is so different than you think. A false step now can ruin your entire future.”

The bunk! She had learned all that before. Nevertheless her heart softened at the sight of her sister’s tears. “Well, don’t cry about it. You act as if I’d done something terrible.” “I want to save you,” gulped Vivian, “before it’s too everlastingly late.” “But you’ve nothing to save me from. I’m not going to do anything.” Vivian touched her eyes with a wisp of chiffon. “I’d rather see you in your grave,” she said, seriously, “than falling for Shepherd Seton. You think I am selfish and unreasonable. “That I don’t know what I’m talking about. But it is God’s truth I’m telling you. He’ll soak up that youth and vitality of yours like a dry sponge. And when he’s through you’ll have nothing. No courage, no ideals, no hopes. . . .” Diana’s innocent face showed only distaste. “I think you’re being rather horrid.” she said. “And besides you’re wasting your time. I know what I’m doing.” They were still at it when Nadine returned. Vivian left. “I’ll see you again soon,” she said, significantly. Diana sighed. Honestly Vivian was impossible. To do the things she did. then have the nerve to lecture her sister? But Diana had no intention of being influenced. Her mother had frightened her into the straight and narrow path for years. But she was beyond that now. And she would stand or fall by her own decisions. Turning from the window where she had been looking out she was surprised to see Nadine, seated at the piano, head down on her folded “What’s the matter with you?” inquired Diana. Nadine sat up groaning, “Jim saw us tonight.” “Were you with Knut?” “Yes. We were dancing at Lido’s when he came in. He didn’t speak to me and if I didn’t know him so well I’d think he hadn’t noticed. We left right away.” “Maybe he didn’t,” Diana comforted. “But he did. His face was so set and funny. Oh, Diana, I’m scared.” Both girls jumped as the telephone rang. Nadine answered. Prom the brevity of the conversation Diana knew it was Jim and that he was exceedingly angry. “He is coming up here right away,” Nadine explained, more frightened than before. “Oh, Diana, what am I to do?”

“Keep your head,” advised Diana with more composure than she was feeling. “Won’t you stay with me?” “Why, no, Nadine. Jim would be furious.” But the stark terror in the other girl’s eyes forced her to stay until Jim came. She was in the living room when he entered and he gave her no opporunity to leave. He stood with his back against the door. His sensitive, rather morose lips tightened ominously. But his voice was quiet. “You’ve double-crossed me,” he said. “Why, no, I haven’t. Jim. That was just one of the fellows from school.” “It makes no difference who it was. We had a definite understanding that the nights you are not with me are to be spent resting or studying. “There is no exception to that rule. I shall see to it that you have all the diversion you need. But if the arrangement is not satisfactory you are at liberty to break with me any time.’* Nadine’s face was sick with despair. Diana could not bear to look at her. “See here, Diana,” Jim appealed. “You know what I’m doing for Nadine. It seems to me I have asked very little in return.

“ You’ve been very generous, Jim,” Diana admitted. “And we have certainly enjoyed living in this lovely apartment. But I have been intending to tell you I’ll have to move the first of the month. “That Isn’t necessary.” He frowned. “I’m sure Nadine has been happier to have you here. And you’ve gotten along splendidly.” “I think it’s better for me to pay for my own room,” Diana explained frankly. Nadine said nothing. “Think it over,” Jim advised. “As for you, Nadine, it’s all up to you. You’re going to play fair or I’m through. And that means every night in the week, and all the time. She sank upon the davenport and began to cry. “Never mind, dear,” Diana comforted her. “It was a beastly arrangement anyway. We never should have agreed to it.” “But what will I do? I can’t afford to break with him.” -- “Get out and hunt a job.” Diana cried, impulsively. “You can sure-
