DIANA'

$ mm

BEGIN HEBE TODAT When Diana Farwell’s mother overhears talk of love between her daughter and a schoolboy friend, she Is fearful that Diana will “go wrong” like her sister, Vivian, who ran away from home four years before. So the mother hastens a marriage of Diana with Arthur Vane, some years older, a successful San Francisco lawyer. Diana is only 18 and goes into marriage believing “Arthur is so different from other men he always will be satisfied with merely spiritual love.” He respects her reserve, at first, as a young girl’s natural shyness. But, after months of loveless wedded life,- he tells her she has wrecked his life. Some time after her mother dies, Diana leaves Arthur and finds her long-lost sister, Vivian, preparing for a trip to New York. Diana rents a room at the home of Mrs. Burton, widowed friend of Diana’s mother, and enrolls in Seton’s School of Acting. Within a few months she has progressed so well with her school work she is taken by Shepherd Seton, head of the school, as his personal pupil. He arouses in her. In the impassioned love scenes they rehearse together, sensations she has never had before. Diana falls passionately in love with Seton. Arthur refuses to divorce her. Seton’s wife goes East for six weeks and Diana notices a coolness in his attitude toward her. Vivian returns to San Francisco and disapproves of Diana’s living with Nadine in an apartment paid for by Jim Devlin. Seton. after Inviting her to dinner, says he may not be able to go. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER XLIII. WHEN the telephone finally rang, Diana was almost too weak to answer it. Her voice sounded lifeless and dead. Os course they couldn’t go now. “I’m sorry,” Seton apologized. “Things have come up which make it impossible for me to get away.” “All right,” she replied, bravely. But her throat was tight with tears. Not only with disappointment. It was his attitude that hurt. As if he begrudged her even the cold comfort of the telephone call. A moment later he had rung off and Diana was face down on the bed. Sick with deferred hope, tortured by suspicion, cold with despair. He didn’t love her . . . Oh, he didn’t. And what a fool she was to care. She tried to lift her head with some degree of pride but the thought of life without him frightened her. What in the world had happened? What could she have done? Nadine was out. The apartment was dark. And the hours she had

Gas Pains Gone; Kidneys Now Fine Engineer Says He Now Knows Right Road to Good Health. Performing important duties while handicapped by stomach and kidney torture was the lot of Mr. C. G.Hungerford, well-known Illinois Central engineer, who lies at 805 So. State St., Freeport, 111. He tells about it as follows: “Nobody knows what I suffered tor ten years, from stomach and kidney trouble. Every attempt to eat caused me to bloat with gas and suffer intensely. My back ached, day and night, and sleep was almost impossible. I felt weak and tired all the time, and kept getting worse. Finally they said I had only fortyeight hours to live. But I am alive and feeling wonderful. I date my recovery from the moment I started using Viuna. The first few doses proved that I had found the right remedy at last, and now all the old gas trouble and stomach pains have gone. My kidneys ceased troubling me and the backache faded away. I sleep soundly and arise feeling rested and ready for the day’s work. I want to give credit where credit is due and Viuna gets all the credit. Viuna acts promptly bn sluggish i.iowels, lary liver and weak kidneys. It parities the blood, clears the skin, restores appetite ana digestion, and bring* new atrength and energy to the whole body. Take a bottle on trial. Then if you re not glad you tried Viuna, your money will be refunded. $1 at druggists, or mailed postpaid by Iceland Medicine C&. expected to spend with her lover crept by like ghosts. Mocking her! When the door bell pealed suddenly she could have screamed. With a smile wavering across her tear-stained face, she opened the door. It was Vivian. Fragrant, exotic, disapproving. “Crying, Diana?” Oh, dear! Os all the times for her to come! “I am,” Diana admitted. Vivian came into the living room looking about suspiciously, as if she suspected the cause of Diana’s distress to be lurking in the shadows. Her eyebrows lifted sympathetically. “What’s the matter, darling? Tell sister.” At the sound of the old affectionate tone Diana dropped at her feet. “I’m so beastly unhappy.” “But why, Diana? Is it on account of your work?” Diana shook her head. Vivian leaned closer until the subtle perfume she used enveloped Diana like a cloud. Diana did not wish to confide in her sister. She knew she would regret It later if she did. But the comfort of those soft hands in the devastating loneliness was too much for her. When Vivian insisted, “Is it a man, Diana?” she gulped an honest, frightened answer as she had been taught to do. But when she lifted her head to see why Vivian did not speak she saw that her eyes were blazing. "I know who it is,” Vivian cried, unexpectedly. “It’s Shepherd Seton” “Why, how did you know?” Vildan shrugged silken shoulders and tapped with an impatient foot. “You admit it, then?” she asked more quietly. Feeling her spiritual withdrawal, Diana arose. Her eyes were swollen from weeping. Her head ached. "Mr. Seton and I are just good friends,” she announced with dignity. “He’s been wonderful to me." “He would be,‘” her sister retorted, bitterly. Diana felt the necessity for further explanation. “There is nothing cheap or common about our feeling for each other.” "He’s married, isn’t he?” Vivian asked with weighted, caustic brevity. The question plunged Diana back into despair. Realizing that Vivian suspected the worst she decided to tell her everything. She was experienced with men. No doubt she understood thenwhims and vagaries. Perhaps she could explain the cause of Seton’s spasmodic coldness. “Vivian,” she said, dejectedly, “I’m going to tell you all about it, if you will promise to be absolutely frank and give me your unbiased opinion.” Vivian seemed very nervous. She lighted a cigaret with a hand that trembled visibly. “I don’t think he cares for his wife at all,” Diana went on in a weak little voice. “You see she isn’t interested in the stage or anything pertaining to it” Vivian said nothing.

“He asked me to be his friend,” the younger girl went on. “He said he needed relaxation and contact with youth. But the basis of our love is our work. He believes in me, Vivian. He thinks I have a wonderful future.” Her face was flushed and as sweet as wet apple blossonms. . . . “He hg.s brought me to life. I uidn’t know the meaning of love.” “Do you think you know it now?” “Why, yes,” Diana answered, innocently. “If he asked me to run away with him tomorrow I’d go.” “Damn!” exploded Vivian. Her voice was bitter. Her hands seizing Diana’s hurt. “You little fool. You precious, baby idiot!” “But Vivian, listen. . . .” “If he hurts you! If he dares to tell you. . . .” “He won’t. He doesn’t ask anything wrong of me. There are times when he seems to be afraid.” "Afraid of what?” “I don't know. He makes the wildest love,” she admitted, frankly. "Then perhaps the very next day his mood is changed. I don’t have any idea why. What do you suppose it is? How can he be crazy about me one minute and so cold the next?” Vivian flung away from her and began to pace the floor. “How do I know? Oh, God, why did you have to get mixed up in an affair like this? I warned you. I told you . . .” Her voice was so bitter that Diana was amazed. Nevertheless she per-
