BEGIN HEBE TODAY When Diana Farwell's mother overhears talk ol love between her daughter and a schoolboy friend, she Is fearful that Diana will "go wrong” like her sister, Vivian, who ran away from home four years before. So the mother hastens a marriage of Diana with Arthur Vane, some years older, a successful San Francisco lawyer. Diana is only 18 and goes into marriage believing "Arthur is so different from other men he always will be satisfied with merely spiritual love.” H* respects her reserve, at first, as a young girl’s natural shyness. But, after months of loveless wedded life, he tells her she has wrecked his life. Some time after her mother dies. Diana leaves Arthur and finds her long-lost sister, Vivian, preparing for a trip to New York. Diana rents a room from Mrs. Burton, widowed friend of Diana’s mother, and enrolls In Seton’s School of Acting. Within a few months sne has progressed so well with her school work that she is taken by Shepherd Seton, head of the school, as his personal pupil. He arouses in her, in the impassioned love scenes they rehearse together, sensations she has never had before. Diana falls passionately in love with Seton. Arthur refuses to divorce her. Seton’s wife goes East for six weeks and Diana notices, a coolness in Ills attitude toward her. She calls on Mrs. Burton, who gives her a letter from Vivian. Vivian returns to San Francisco and disapproves of Diana living with Nadine in an apparent paid for by Jim Devlin. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER XLI DIANA broached the subject of moving to Nadine on the way to school. Nadine was driving. She kept her gaze ahead, but she was frowning. “Why now, Diana? This is no time to move.” “Why not?” “Just before Christmas,” Nadine rfaid meaningly, “Anyway, Jim has signed a year’s lease. He’d be furious.” “I’m afraid I’ll have to go alone, then,” Diana replied. Nadine was silent a moment, then she said, listlessly: “So your sister doesn’t approve of me?” “Vivian didn’t say a word against you,” protested Diana. “She suspected something, of course. She knows we can’t afford a place like that.” Nadine would be surprised if she knew the truth about Vivian. Diana felt the most absurd sense of satisfaction in having the other girl think her sister was a stickler for the proprieties. Quite a novelty to have any one consider Vivian a prude. But tears were in Nadine’s blus •yes.

. "I suppose she was just horrified,” she cried, childishly. “She was shocked,” admitted Diana, gratified to the point of exaggeration. “Vivian’s ridiculous about me. Almost as bad as a mother.” Nadine parked the car. “Few would approve, I suppose.” “That’s it,” Diana continued, eargerly. “It really puts both of us in a position that looks worse that it is. If you want to accept Jim’s help that’s your business. But let’s at least pay for our own room.” They had left the car and were entering the school when Nadine said, frankly, “I can’t, Diana. I haven’t a cent to my name.” Diana stared at her. “You don’t mean that?” “Yes I do. It’s impossible for me to even consider a break with Jim now. Don’t you see? Oh, there’s Knut! Hoo-hoo! Mr. Peterson!” The blond giant came to her with a smile like Christmas morning. “Did you get your practicing done?” Diana heard him ask, fondly. “Did I?” lied Nadine. “I’ve worked like the devil this weekend.” They passed into the ballroom, drowned in each other’s eyes. . . . Diana was feeling rather gay herself. She went through her hour with Mamzelle wondering why it had ever seemed so difficult. And she left the dressing room with flushed cheeks and glowing eyes. She really couldn’t keep from being happy. Every one seemed nicer than usual. More interesting. . . . She told herself she was in love with the world. But she was apt to feel that way before a lesson with Seton. She entered his studio with a face so sunny, so sparkling exhilarated, that he came the length of two rooms to greet her. It was a morning she never forgot. His passionate admiration gave her something of the old goddess feeling. . . . “‘You’re beautiful, Diana? You’re exquisite,” he said, huskily. He had smoothed her hair as if its very texture pleased him. He has kissed her, reverently, as if he feared to brush the bloom from something unspeakably delicate, then suddenly had burled his lips in the palm of her hand. If she had been old and hideous his love-making would have made her beautiful. It was like a draught of wine which she drank, greedily. “Do you really think so?” “Say it again!” “Oh, honestly?”

Once she said, “I need a little praise. I’ve been feeling rather smacked down." “No reason for it. I’ve told you time after time ..." “But I’ve had the idea that you were disappointed in me lately.” “You ought to be spanked. I’ve never had a pupil I’ve complimented more.” “But I don’t want compliments,” she pouted. “It’s just that I want to feel you’re back of me. Rooting for me ... ” “My dear, you do know that." “Our association seems so changeable,” she complained. “One day I’m sitting on top of the world. The next I’m tortunred into all sorts of misgivings.” It was delicious to be able to confess this to him. To be silly and unreasonable yet to know that he understood. She thought it must be as near perfection as any human relationship could come. And perhaps she was right. For she was never to experience it again. With any one! He told her of his plans for putting on “Mona Vanna.” Nothing was to be left undone. As she listened the future seemed to unroll before her, brilliantly. She knew she would succeed if he had confidence in her.

her. This was one of the possibilities she had foreseen when he said his wife would be away. Yet the days had passed with no attempt to improve that opportunity. The invitation, coming unexpectedly, was all the more prized. She told herself it might be her lucky day. But she changed her mind when she reached home and found a penciled note from Nadine.
