Many/Suffer Love Hunger in Marriage BY MARTHA LEE “1 crave affection like I do food,” writes one young wife. Most of us do. The love hunger is one of the great urges of the race, and- no person can be completely happy until he finds some outlet for it. The .marriage in which one loves, and the other is loved, in which one gives and the other takes, gives rise to much unhappiness. “I’m tired of being the only lover in the family,” said one. Love craves response above all things, and many unloved partners write for advice. They do not wish to break up their homes, or to be disloyal to their marriage vows, and yet they do not see how they can live unless there is some change. One danger these persons run is in allowing their experience to make them sad. Sadness defeats the very thing they are trying to accomplish, and that is an affectionate response in the passive partner. Somewhere I read that “Sorrow is an oiily child, but happiness was bom twins.” One can be sad, but it takes two to be happy. I should advise people who feel that they are unloved to fill their lives with other things, and to expose themselves to environments that* tend to make them happy. Happiness is magnetic, and the person who feels it draws other people to him. Joy and good humor always search for a companion and seldom fails to find one, for these qualities are contagious. The persbn who is striving to win the love of another will have better success if he can contrive to find the secret of joyousness, avoiding sorrow as he would the plague. He Strikes Her Sear Miss Le#: I am a girl of nineteen and have been married for eight months to a man of twenty-one. Miss Lee, X love my husband more than anyone in the world, but the least thing I do he hits me tor it. He wants me to go to work and I am not in the best of nealth, so X" can’t do anything. Os course, he has had bills to pay since we got married, but he doesn’t owe over SSO at all and he Is not satisfied unless he has money in Ids pockets all the time. He keeps all the money and the whole amount he has given me since we have been married has amounted to about $lO. Do you think he loves me if Jie treats me as he does? He is sweet at times and I love him, but I cannot stand everything. I never did love anyone but him. but if things keep on X won’t be responsible for what Ido Would you go to work or lust stay home and take what he wants to give

me?. I keep the house clean and have his meals ready, and I love him, but I can't go on like this. BOBBIE. Dear Bobbie: If you are able to work and help out on this economic problem, I think it would be very good of you to do so, since, you have no little children. Economic pressure is the cause of a great deal of trouble in married life, and if you could help relieve this, things might go a lot smoother for you. I do not think that you should allow your husband to hit you, as this will eventually destroy his respect for you. Each time this happens, ask yourself, “Why did he hit me? And what satisfaction did he get out of it?” If you can determine the cause, then avoid it in the future. When he hits you he feels some sort of power over you that is Rleasant to him. Do you make a scene when he strikes you, fighting back and crying? If you do, stop it, and keep your dignity. Leave the house, or at least leave the room when he resorts to physical violence, and do not allow your temper to be aroused or your tears to flow, as he probably enjoys this performance, unconsciously. You are both very young, and there is every chance for you to adjust yourselves and learn the art of being happy together. Help your husband to gain control over himself, anti do not provoke him unnecessarily while he is learning. Hill Billy, who does x>ot want her letter printed, says that her husband has been acting strange for a long time. He is a good provider, and she loves him, but has lost her confidence in him because of his performances, and feels that her heart is broken. She is in poor health and has a baby girl, and wants to know if she should leave her husband. Not yet, Hill Billy. Os two evils, choose the lesser. A sick woman with a baby girl is better off with a husband who is a good provider, than she is without any husband at all. Stay where you are, and try by your own sweetness and charm to win him from his strange watfs. Do not mope and cry, but try to find resources within yourself which will help to fill your life. Be patient and do not nag, &nd perhaps he will come back and love you as he did in the beginning. Larger Bags The winter’s hand bags grow larger. Some of them are roomy to. the point of pouchiness. BEAUTY HOW and WHY ttnu APPLYING CHEMICAL DEPILATORIES

BY ANN ALYSIS The depilatories are certain chemicals used for the purpose of removing superfluous hair. In times gone by, the caustic alkalis, such as soda and potash, were the favored depilatories, but nowadays, we use such drugs as barium, calcium, or strontium sulphide. Except strontium, all the sulphides have two attributes in common. They are all vile smelling chemicals. (.The sulphides are all malodorous.) Also they will dissolve 4iorny substances, hair, by the way, being classed as a horny substance, similar to the nails. Fearful, indeed, are some of the scientific classifications. The general directions for all depilatories are to apply in paste form, rather quickly, allow to remain on skin for a few minutes, then remove the dissolved hairs with a dull knife, and wash affected surface thoroughly. Apply a bland

cream or ointment to prevent or subdue any irhtation of the skin. As the sulphides are such active chemicals and so difficult for any but a chemist to handle safely, my advice to you is to buy any well advertised depilatory on the market, and follow directions faithfully. There is then little danger of bad result/ Depilatories do not remove the hair permanently. That is, not in one application, though it is claimed that frequent applications will weaken the growth. . i * Velvet Slippers Velvet slippers, like velvet hats, encroach upon the standard styles.
