FINDS GERMANS MORE FRIENDLY TO AMERICANS Europe Envies Prosperity of U. S.; Breeding Hate Among Nations; This is the fifth in the series of six articles by Milton Bronner European correspondent for The Times >and NEA. Service, analyzing the European situation. ' BY MILTON BRONNER NEA Service Writer LONDON, Dec. 3.—Not long ago a fairly well-known writer for an American weekly went home with a “great discovery,” that Americans are not loved in Europe. It handed a laugh to every person informed about Europe; his “discovery” has been an open secret for years. When the interests of two countries march together for war or for peace, for mutual trade, for mutual profit, all is well. The moment interests clash, friendship ceases. It is a paradox that the country in which Americans probably are the most popular today is the one we helped lick—Germany. We took no colonies from Germany, demanded no reparations and we gave the fallen foe a hand. Thinks U. S. Prosperous America is both feared and envied in Europe. The European with his high taxes, his impoverished conditions, his country shot to pieces by the war, his unemployment, his industrial depression, sees across the. Atlantic a continental domain stuffed with all the good things of the earth except rubber, tin, coffee, cocoa and tea, a ■'nearly self-con-tained country both as to food and \paw materials. He sees 120,000,000 busy people s with a general average of well-being never before witnessed in world his- - tory. He sees a country which has more working men owning their own homes, own gardens, own automobiles, own pianos than history has ever before recorded. Feared, Envied And he envies us. He sees a country so highly industrialized that by mass production we are invading his home markets and taking away from him world markets. And he fears us. Therefore, he is apt to hate us. They have an ace in the hole in lower wages than we have. First they will be on the defensive. Afterward they will go on the offensive. First they will try to conserve for themselves the European market Afterwards they will seek trade in China and Russia and South America. / They believe Americans are making themselves hated by the Latin republics, because of interference in the affairs of Haiti, Nicaragua and Mexico. Fight With Trusts French and German potash kings torgetting the war, formed a potash trust. In September, 1926, a great steel cartel was constituted, taking into its folds the great producers of Germany, France, Belgium, Luxemburg and the Saar Valley. Thus German coal and French iron ore were brought into combination. An east European steel cartel has been formed, comprising the Czechoslovakian steel men, the Austrian Rothschild and Steeg groups, the French Schneider group’s mills in eastern Europe, the German Mannesmann group in the same territory, the British group which controls mills in Rumania and various

other organizations in Rumania and Jugoslavia. Sees Great Merger Then there is a European Rail Makers’ Association, a German chemical industries combine, a similar one in Franc*, a German electric combine and a European aluminum cartel comprising German, English, French, Swiss, Austrian and Norwegian firing . There is a for a PanEuropean Industrial Union which would be a trust of trusts, linking up all the powerful cartels into one giant cartel for mutual action. Sb far England has held aloof from these continental schemes. But in Great Britain itself Sir Alfred Mond has formed a great chemical trust. Furthermore this multi-million-aire, who was formerly a member of 'the British cabinet, visions another United States under the British flag, an Empire Economic Union to keep foreign goods out by tariff walls.
