BEGIN HEBE TODAY When Diana Harwell’s mother overhears talk of love between her daughter and a schoolboy friend, she is fearful that Diana will “go wrong" like her Sister, Vivian, who ran away from home our years before, so the mother hastens a marriage of Diana with Arthur Vane, some year solder, a successful San Francisco lawyer. Diana is only 18 and goes into marriage believing "Arthur is so different from other men he always will be satislied with merely spiritual love.” He respects her reserve, as a young girl's natural shyness, at first. But, after months of loveless wedded life, he tells her she has wrecked his life. Some time after her mother dies, Diana leavs Arthur and finds hr long-lost sister, Vivian, preparing for a trip to New York. Diana rents a room at the home Os Mrs. Burton, widowed friend of Diana’s mother, and enrolls in Seton’s School of Acting. Within a few months she has ffogressed so well with her work that she is taken by Shepherd Seton, head of the School, as his personal pupil. In a few weeks he aroused in her, in the impassioned love scenes they rehearse to- { ether, sensations she has never had beore. Diana falls passionately In love with Seton and decides to ask Arthur for a divorce. Arthur flatly refuses to divorce her. When she returns to the studio. Beton tells her his wife has gone East for six weeks. NOW GO ON WITH THE STOBY CHAPTER XXXV WHEN Diana reached heme she spent an hour practicing. It was such sheer delight to work for Seton. Confident always of his appreciation! But back of her absorption ran an undercurrent of exeltement. “Six weeks I suppose.” Nadine found her sitting on the piano, rehearsing a balcony scene. Bhe smiled. "How can you be so energetic, Diana? I’ve no ambition at all.” "You don’t get enough sleep.” Nadine sighed and let her hat slip from listless fingers. "You’re right,” she admitted. "Oh, dear, sometimes I wonder. . . "What’s the matter now?” "Jim is a darling and I do appreciate all he’s doing for me, but—" She hesitated, looking adorably tristful and pathetic. “Sometimes,” she said, “I wish I could step out with someone else.” “Who?” Diana asked, bluntly. "Oh, someone my own age. Jim’s taste’s are so middle-aged. I’d appreciate someone young and frivolous.” Diana watched her curiously. "Is it understood that you are not to make engagements with anyone else?” "Nothing’s been said about It, but he keeps too close guard for me to do any stepping without his knowing it.” “Let him,” advised Diana. “If his Interest is purely fatherly. . . Both girls smiled.
Had Years of Gas and Stomach Agony Finally Found Right Remedy. Health Perfect Now. Gaining Weight. People who dread every meal because of the stomach pains they know it means, will be glad to know how Miss Edna A. Dane, 220 N. Winnebago St., Rockford, 111., escaped from this dreadful affliction. She writes: "For three years, after every meal, I suffered agony with indigestion, gas pains, and biliousness. Food soured and nauseated me. A few months ago I had a severe stomach attack that kept me in bed six weeks. I couldn’t hold any food on my stomach, and I got extremely weak and lost weight rapidly. Nothing seemed to help me, and I was terribly discouraged when I happened to read about Viuna and decided to try it. That was the turning: point. Before I had finished the first bottle I felt a great change for the better. Now my stomach is fine, and I can eat anything without any pain, sourness or belching. The headaches, which were terrible, have all gone, and so have the hot flashes. I am better In every way than I have been for years, and am rapidly regaining my lost weight.” Viuna acts promptly bn sluggish Bowels, lasy liver and weak kidneys. It pnriflea the blood, cleara the akin, reatorea appetite and digestion, and brings new strength and energy to the whole i body. Take a bottle on trial. Then If yon re not glad yon tried Vinna, your money will be refunded. $1 at druggists, er mailed postpaid by Iceland Medicine Cos., Indianapolis, Ind. *

"You aren’t blind, Diana.” "Absolutely not! But if I wanted to have a date with someone else, I bet you I would.” "What shall I say? How can I Explain?” "Just tell him that you’ve been invited to go to the theater with So-and-So.” T’m supposing,”, she added shrewdly, “that you’ve already selected the man.” "You’re right," Nadine said, slowly. “It’s Knut Peterson.” “Not the former acrobat?” “Why not?” Nadine’s voice was so sharp that Diana tempered her surprise. “Why not, indeed? I had no Idea you were interested in him. That’s all.” She could not imagine the dainty Nadine enamoured with that heavy, slow-witted fellow. “At least he’s young and alive,” Nadine complained, petulantly. But when the telephone rang she flew toltaswer it, cooing, “Yes, Jim. Os course, I do. Tonight? Why, surely. That’s awfully sweet of you.” Diana, a little disgusted, sought her own room. At least her own affair was genuine. Not for what she hoped to get out of It Almost unconsciously she was praying that Seton would call. But the evening passed with no summons from the telephone, although she sat where she could answer it immediately. At 11 o’clock she went to bed, sighing, “Oh, well, I could scarcely expect to see him so soon.” But for an hour she lay awake, hoping that he would at least call and say “good night.” Why shouldn't he? There was no one to object. Gradually it dawned upon her that she might do it herself. Such delicious fun to call and whisper, “Good night, darling!” Smiling in anticipation of his delight, she threw a dressing gown about her and slipped to the telephone. She repeated his number, shivering with exclteemnt. A servant answered, but, undaunted, she asked for "Mr. Seton, please.” It was some time before his voice vibrated across the wire. Diana took a deep breath and cried, "Goodnight, darling.” “Who is speaking, please?" As if he didn’t recognize that voice, whose very inflections were his own. “It’s Diana,” she pouted. “O, yes,” he repeated carefully. “What was it you wanted?" The very formality of his tone estranged her utterly. She was an outcast, rejected, forlorn! In a small, hurt voice she managed to gasp, “Why, nothing! I only

wanted to say goodnight. I’m sorry if I’ve disturbed you." “That’s quite all right," he answered, politely. "I’m glad you called. I’ll discuss It with you tomorrow.” Feeling dazed, bewildered, slapped in the face. Diana staggered from the telephone. If his wife had been at home she could have understood his being annoyed. But under those circumstances she would never have called. What in the world was wrong with him? What could possibly have happened? Why, only that afternoon he had held her in his arms and kissed her passionately. . . . Had he forgotten? So soon? Or was it regret? That must be it, she decided. He regretted the chances impulse had forced him to take. She was sitting on the floor, arms locked about her knees, when Nadine returned. “Hello!” she cried. "What are you doing up? It’s after 1 o’clock” “I know it,” Diana replied wearily. "I’ve had a shock.” Nadine threw her coat and hat into a chair and began to pace the room. "O, Diana,” she wailed, "I’m so fed up .... I hate Jim Devlin.” “Why not break with him then?” Diana advised, coldly. "No one is forcing you to accept his attentions. Let’s give up this apartment and get a place we can pay for ourselves.” “I loahe dingy, cheap apartments. I’ve lived in them all my life."

Tears were streaming down her exquisite face. Even weeping could not mar Nadine’s loveliness. But Diana’s heart was hard. “You ought to know by now,” she said, crossly, "that no one can have everything. And once you've taken what you want most there’s nothing to do but pay for It” "But I have paid for It,” sobbed Nadine. "At least I liked him. It fascinated me to have a mnn so well-bred and wealthy interested in me. But he’s not playing fair. He’s trying to monopolize me.” "Wouldn’t he agree to an engagement with the brave Knut?" "He would noti” cried Nadine, dabbing at her wet eyes. "He said he expected me to spend the evenings I was not with him in rest or Thought Asthma Would Smother Her 81eeps All Night Now.
