BEGIN HEBE TODAT ' When Diana Farwell’s mother overhears talk of love between her daughter and a schoolboy friend, she Is fearful that Diana will ’'go wrong” like her sister. Vivian, who ran away from home four years before. So the mother hastens a marriage of Diana with Arthur Vane, some years older, a successful San Francisco lawyer. Diana is only 18 and foes Into marriage believing “Arthur Is so different ■ from other men he always will be satisfied with merely spiritual love.” He respects her reserve, as a young girl’s natural shyness, at first. But. after months of loveless wedded life, he tells she has wrecked his life. Some time after her mother dies. Diana leaves Arthur and finds her long-lost sister. Vivian, preparing for a trip to New York. Diana rents a room at the home of Mrs. Burton, widowed friend of Diana’s mother, and enrolls in Se ton's School of Acting. Within a few months she has progressed so well with her work that she is taken by Shepherd Seton, head of the school, as his personal pup'l. In a few weeks he has aroused in her. In the Impassioned love scenes they rehearse together. sensations she has never had before. Diana falls passionately In love with Seton and decides to ask Arthur for a divorce. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER XXIII ARTHUR met her coolly. Diana had preferred seeing him at the Palace rather than his office. His stenographer must know they were no longer living together, but she had no desire to contribute any further information. Even after they were seated and had ordered luncheon, he made no attempt to discover her reason for suggesting the engagement. His conversation was pleasantly impersonal. Interesting! With no trace of emotion! Diana was piqued, although she reminded herself that this attitude Would make it easier to broach the subject in mind“l suppose you’re wondering why Z wanted to see you?” she began, rather nervously. Arthur smiled, politely. "Not at all. There’s no reason We shouldn’t have lunch together occasionally. Quite the modem thing to do.” “But I had a definite purpose in asking you to meet me, Arthur.” His expression changed, but he Said nothing, and Diana hastened on, feeling her poise slip with every word. “When are we going to get a divorce?” His voice was hard. “Are you in a hurry for one?" “Yes, I am.” “Why?” Her blue eyes were reproachful as she replied, "Does it matter? I want one. That’s all. We aren’t living together. It’s ridiculous for us not to be divorced ” Bhe added, “Supposing you should want to marry again?” "Do YOU? Is that the reason for your insistence?” "No, Arthur. Ido not. I have no intention of ever remarrying.” “That’s what I thought,” he said, dryly. "Well, as a matter of fact, I haven’t, either.”

{ His obstinacy infuriated her. “Do you mean you refuse to get a divorce from me?” “My dear Diana, If you are so anxious why not apply for one yourself?” “You know I don’t know the first thing about it,” she cried, In exasperation. “Besides, what grounds would I haye?” “That’s It exactly,” he agreed. “You haven’t any.” “But you have,” she Insisted. ‘Tve deserted you. I’ve refused to live with you.” Arthur was not smiling“Very true! But I’ve dragged too many husbands and wives through the muck of a divorce proceedings to bring it on either you or myself. If either of us wished to remarry, that would be different.” In spite of the fact that tne waiter was serving cocktails, Diana was compelled to dry her eyes. “There’s nothing to cry about I promise you may have It any time . . "I want it now. . . “Any time,” be repeated, meaningly, “that you wish to marry some ope else. Until then I am afraid you really must remain my wife. Os course," he explained, generously, "I understand that it is never to mean anything.” Diana gulped and attempted to smile. “All right,” she said, “if you insist on being hateful about it.” For the first time the old hurt look was in Arthur’s eyes. “I don’t mean to be hateful,” he said, patiently. “Only sensible- As I see it, it’s the thing your mother would wish.” “I promised to take care of you, Diana, and while my name may be little if any protection to you in the new surroundings and among the new acquaintances you have chosen, such as it is I want you to have it. I want you to feel free to ask my help or advice at any time.” “There he goes,” she thought. “Always raving about how much wiser he is.” "That’s very kind of you,” she said, frozenly. "But I prefer to stand or faU by my own mistakes.”

“Os course,” he answered, calmly, “you would feel that way. But if the moment ever comes when my help is necessary, you’ll change your mind.” In spite of their altercation, Diana was enjoying her lunch. She had to admit that her companion was the most distinguished looking man in the room. And one of the things which had always found favor with her was his ability to order the things she liked- So she was appreciating the avocado salad even while she upbraided him. “This is very unkind of you, Arthur. And not at all the attitude I should expect you to take.” "No? Well, I’m sorry if I’ve disappointed you. But in my experience as a lawyer I’ve discovered that is the normal state for a wife to be in. It really is the only normal thing about OUR marriage, isn’t it? Rather jolly to comply with one of the regulations.” "You’re horrid. You’re a brute. I hate you.” His face whitened, but he replied. "Quite a credit to your training, aren’t you? You displayed a little real feeling then.” Suddenly Diana felt she could not eat another bite. She faced him,
