WHILE Palestine was weakening itself with division, great empires were growing about her to the east. In 732 B. C. the Assyrians took Samarta, capital of the northern Hebrew kingdom; and a few years later, led by Sennacherib, they laid siege to Jerusalem. And while the despairing Jews felt the anguish of starvation, and aske dthemselves why their god had abandoned them, a greater prophet rose among them than ever before, and dareed to tell them that the army of Assyria was but a rod and a scourge in Yahveh’s hand to bring his people back to justice and social peace. It is unnecessary to meet war with war, said Isaiah to the incredulous Jews; war is a worse evil than any that it can remedy; meet it with righteousness, and God will show a just nation the way out of might into right, out of empire into federation. "And he shall judge among the nations and shall rebuke many people; AND THEY SHALL BEAT THEIR SWORDS INTO PLOUGHSHARES AND THEIR SPEARS INTO PRUNING HOOKS; NATION SHALL NOT LIFT UP SWORD AGAINST NATION, NEITHER SHALL THEY LEARN WAR ANYMORE.” 01., 4.) For a time it seemed that Yahveh

the talk of cities and towns throughout this entire section. For instance, just a few days ago, Mr. Edward R. Hobbs, popular Conductor on the Union Traction Interurban car, running from Peru to Indianapolis, and whose home is at 266 East Main St., Peru, Ind., made the following statement about Konjola: “Regardless of how much I praised Konjola I could not begin to tell the actual good that it has done for me,” said Mr. Hobbs,. “I think it is the greatest medicine that has ever been given to humanity and if people only knew what it has done for me they would certainly give it a trial. I would not take any price for the health which I have gained. The doctors did all they could for me and I tried all kinds of medicines but none of them ever reached my case. I became thoroughly disgusted and did not know what was going to happen to me next. On one of my runs to Indianapolis I happened to notice Konjola in one of the Hook drug stores and inquired as to its merits. I was advised to try it as it was doing so much good in Indianapolis to relieve sufferers. I did this and that is the reason I am voluntarily indorsing Konjola, hoping that by so doing I may be able to help others who are suffering. “No one knows the suffering which I went through with. My stomach was in a terrible condition. I had to be on a diet at all times and even then I could not find a diet that would do me much good. I have taken nothing but milk for a period of ninety-five days at a time and could scarcely keep that on my stomach but a short time. I would bloat something terrible, would get dizzy spells, and would belch up a hot, sour, bitter liquid which' would burn my throat like, fire. I was advised that this was caused by my liver. There was a feeling in my stomach like something grabbing and knawing. After what little food 1 ate went to my stomach it would seem like a hard rock had formed in the pit of my stomach and would then form a gas and cause considerable bloating and soreness. I had a constant headache and also lost weight very fast. This will give the readers an idea of what I suffered. I realized I would have to give this medicine a good trial if I was to get over this suffering of fifteen years standing. Well I have done my part and thanks to your wonderful medicine it has done its part also, and I am enjoying great health today after taking eight bottles of Konjola. I have already gained twenty pounds of the weight I lost and I certainly am thankful. I will always boost Konjola as the medicine of merit. I might also ad that I have perfect bowel, action now. That is something I never had before taking Konjola.” The Konjola Man is at Hook’s Drug Store, Illinois and Washington Sts., Indianapolis, where he is daily meeting the public and introducing and explaining the merjts of this remedy. Konjola is also sold in large quantities by every Hook store of this city and by all good druggists throughout this section.—
would protect his p ople; a great pestilence swept away the army of Senfiacherib (701 B. C.) and Jerusalem was saved. But the political chaos of Judah combined with its iessicated soil and its economic dependence upon Phoenician trade to leave it open to renewed attack; and in 586 B. C. Nebuchadnezzar, leading the armies to the new empire of Chaldea, captured Jeruslem and dragged most of its population away with him to captivity in Babylon. It was in these awful days that Jeremiah poured forth his wrath Upon the leaders of his people, denouncing their foolish reliance upon force, and attributing the misfortunes of the Jews to the exploitation and greed which belied in practice their religion of benevolence and justice. His country exiled him and he ended his days in misery and bitterness in Egypt, but he had prepared the way for a prophet greater than himself, that anonymous genius who in the later chapters (xl.-lv.) of the Book of Isaiah explained to the Jews the narrowness of their tribal deity and lifted them for the first time to the vision of God as the spirit of life not of one people merely, but of all things. No longer “I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have other gods before mi;” there were no other gods, there was only one:—“I am the Lord, and there is none else” (xlv., 5). And then again we touch a peak in literature:— Behold the Lord God, who hath measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth In a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance. ... Behold the nations are as a drop of a bucket; behold He taketh up the isles as a very little thing. It is He that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spieadeth them out as a tent to dwell in. (xl.). Here at last is monotheism, and the prelude to Job, and the introduction to Spinoza, and the preparation for science; here is the first clear view of unity of the world. n m YET the spirit of the prophets is not the spirit of science; it is rather the stem voice of Jesus and Paul, of Luther and Calvin and Knox, of Hilton and Carlyle. The prophets were Puritans; they were the first to emphasize the idea of sin and to brand worldly pleasure as iniquity; they were the first Protestants, and it was the Old Testament rather than the New that made the Reformation. Perhaps because their nation was in the throes of mortal combat they found no place in the good life for the joys of the earth, and their influence so strengthened the ancient prohibition of graven images that

their people have been until modern times almost completely sterile in the plastic and pictorial arts. And. like all moralists, and even while denouncing tribal theology, they betrayed a tribal narrowness and dogmatism in their more bitter moments. Jeremiah denounces to death those who differ from him, and some say it was through his influence that those terrible passages were written into Deuteronomy (vii.) punishing heresy with death, which were copied verbatim by the leaders of the Inquisition. So far they partook of the habits and perspective of their time; but in other regards how far they saw ahead, and how profoundly they spoke! They did not come to the intelligence and liberality of the Greeks, but they rose far above the Greeks in their conception of the brotherhood of manThey began the exaltation, even in a military age, of those virtues of simplicity and gentleness and mutual aid which Jesus was to make the essence of His gospel; they prepared for him by announcing the coming of a Saviour; they transformed a tribal god of war into a universal god of love; they were the first Christians and the first humanitarians. The voice of social revolt sounds in all their speech. They believed with a later Jew that quick riches are seldom innocent; they looked upon large fortunes as morally indecent and politically dangerous; they denounced usury, slavery and violence; they made God the father of all men, in order to make all men brothers. They made the Jews-stand in history for fraternity, as the Greeks stand for intelligence, and the French for equality, and the English for liberty. Greece had culture, but not heart; even its philosophers made little protest against slavery; it created science and it perfected art; but it remained for the Jews to formulate

the conception of social justice and the rights of man. Through this faith little Israel, crushed between the jaws of brutal empires, won to victory in the end; and today the peoples that conquered it in the flesh bow to it in the spirit, pray to the gods it created and aspire to the ideals which it gave to the world. m n ' PHILOSOPHERS HALF a century passed. Across the Gulf from Chaldea another empire rose to wealth and power, and sent out barbarian armies to lay waste settled states. Persia (whose story will come as the background of Marathon) had grown to such supremacy and repute that when its armies approached Babylon the great capital surrendered without a siege (539 B. C.). The enlightened Cyrus permitted the Jews to return to Jerusalem, and encouraged and protected them while they labored to re-establish their civilization. tt tt m DISASTER may destroy States, but it nourishes religion. The Jews returned from Babylon almost destitute of political organization, but their priesthood was still organized and powerful. trust in arms gave way to a passionate belief that soon Yahveh would vindicate himself as ruler not of a tribe only, but of the world. It was now the priests collected the hymns sung in the Temple and made up that book of Psalms which marks the highest reach to which lyric ptry has ever risen. It was now (ca. 440 B. C.) that the priest Ezra put the Torah or Pentateuch into its present form and made it a staff of strength for his suffering people. Perhaps, if they were faithful to the law, Yahveh would send a Saviour, & Messiah, who would lead them out of misery into happiness and peace. But Yahveh did not appear; in his stead came Alexander, further scourge of a bitter god; and the genial protectorate of Persia passed into the cruel rule of the Macedonian Greeks. Alexander was generous enough; but when he died he left his empire “to the strongest,” who had had no Aristotles to refine them. In 319 B. C. Antlochus entered Jerusalem to collect human material for a colony at Alexandria. Unable to understand the resistance of the Jews, he descended to the most brutal revenge, and set about to destroy their religion as well as their remaining state. Thousands of inhabitants were killed, thousands were sold into slavery; many thousands more fled, so that there came a time when Jerusalem contained hardly a single Hebrew. Circumcision fend other Jewish rites were prohibited; no religious observance of the Sabbath was allowed; and all copies of the Torah that the government could find were destroyed. Horrible things, no doubt exaggerated, were told. Two mothers were brought before the judges charged with having circumcised their children. They were hung up by their breasts and then flung from the city wall. Some people who had taken refuge in a cave, to keep the Sab-
bath there, allowed themselves to be suffocated with smoke rather than to defend themselves.” (Renan, "History of the People of Israel,” vol. iv. pp. 270-3).
