BEGIN HERE TODAY When Diana Farwell’s mother overhears talk of love between her daughter and a schoolboy friend, she is fearful that Diana will “go wrong” like her sister Vivian, who ran away from home four years before. So the mother hastens a marriage of Diana with Arthur Vane some years older, a successful San Francisco lawyer. Diana is only 18 and- goes into marriage believing ‘‘Arthur is so different from other men he always be satisfied with merely spiritual love. He respects her reserve, as a young girl’s natural shyness, at first. But, after many months of loveless wedded life, he tells her she has wrecked his life. Some time after her mother dies, Diana leaves Arthur and finds her long-lost sister, Vivian, preparing for a trip to New York. Diana rents a room at the home of Mrs. Burton. widowed friend of Diana’s mother, and enrolls in Seton’s School of Acting. After about a year, she has progressed so well with her work that she is taken by Shepherd Seton. head of the school, as his personal pupil. One afternoon he takes her for an automobile ride and kisses her. The next dav he tells her he will call on her that evening at the apartment she occupies with a fellow student, Nadine, who is a friend of Jim Devlin. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER XXXII SHEPHERD SETON and Jim met In the apartment as casually as If it were Seton’s studio. At 10 o’clock Jim took Nadine so ra ride and Seton came to see Diana. Standing in the circle of his arms, the clamor of her pulses frightened her. She hid her face. “What is it, dear?” “Oh,” she cried, “we must conquer this thing.” “What thing?” "This intoxication,” she faltered, “which seems to have come over us. I think we ought to fight it.” ‘No doubt you’re right. But I’m in no mood for battle. We are going to be very circumpspect, Diana. I’m not asking you to do anything wrong. But don’t tell me I can refrain from kissing you when we are in almost daily contact.”

She lifted troubled eyes. “But can’t you see where we’re drifting? And I won’t have our friendship even smiled at by anyone at school. It would be dreadful for you to be talked about.” “Oh, it’s my reputation you’re shuddering over?” “It is,” she assured him, innocently. His arms tightened. "Diana, your generosity makes me ashamed. I promise to be very, very good. We won’t do anything that can cause any possible comment. Does that satisfy you?” “Then what is it you of me?” He kissed her, tenderly. “Just this,” he answered. Her resistance crumpled like paper walls. . . . Through the month of October Diana worked as never before. Seton was planning to put her on at the Little Theater the first of the year. She had been told that “everything” depended on her first appearance in a leading role. She was into it now body and soul. But her work was so closely connected with her love that she had ceased trying to separate them. Each day brought improvement. New meaning ran like a scarlet thread through lines that had been hidden before. She saw admiration in the eyes of her fellow students. Knew that she was pointed out to round-eyed newcomers as Diane Dore. But the small notoriety did not affect her. She had reached it by a path too dizzyingly steep to permit of any crowing. Seton was unstinted with his praise, /

"You’re going to get across, Diana. And get across big.” But there were days when she longed for a word from Klesalek. Her classes with him were now only ty>rPP a urpplr He seemed to have drawn a veil of reserve between them. And while he offered little criticism Diana longed for the approbation which did not come. One night Seton came to the apartment about 10 o’clock. Diana was reading in bed and Nadine was singing in the living room. He came to the open bedroom door. “Don’t tell me you’ve gone for the night?” “I certainly have. Although I might consider coming back again if your inducement is attractive enough.” “Come out and see,” he grinned. And she hastily donned her clothes for him. It had been agreed '• hat he was not to come here. They really had been discreet, she reflected. A drive now and then through moon-haunted streets, and the sorrowful ecstacy of kisses, which could lead to nothing. Scant fare for two lovers with senses keyed to top pitch by their work together. But she loved him for the rigid self-control beneath his passion. Entering the living room she was immediately conscious of his excitement. “What in the world’s the matter?” “Get your coat.” Almost roughly he bundled her into a wrap. “Say good-by! We may not be back.” His high spirits were infectious. She felt the happiness his presence always brought and the car shot forward. “Where are we going?” “Anywhere! I’m tired being good ” Mile after mile flew under his steady hand. Diana lost all sense of time, but she knew it was very late before he turned the car back toward San Francisco. \ “Diana,” he said. “I’m all keyed up tonight. You don’t know how much you mean to me.” Wishing she might be everything to him, Diana dared not reply. She was thinking of his beautfiul wife.

Wondering how much she meant to him. But even the thought of her was an intrusion. When they reached the apartment Nadine had gone to bed. “You'd better not come in,” Diana said. He did not answer, but followed her inside and closed the door. She smiled. “Do you know you’re very difficult tonight?” "Am I? Well, I feel that anything I want tonight must not be refused.” She curtsied with mischief in her eyes. “Yes, milord!” He threw himself into a chair. “Come hither, slave!” She went, smiling, until he drew her down upon his knee. “I’m crazy about you. Crazier every day. Why should v/e go on torturing ourselves?” “Somewhere I’ve acquired the conviction that one mustn’t take what isn’t his,” she said. “But you are mine. You aren’t living with your husband. I doubt if he has ever meant as much to you as I do.” “That is quite true,” she admitted. “But what about you?” He frowned and Diana began to trace imaginary circles in his hair. Suddenly he began kissing her. “You are mine! Do you deny it?” “No!” she whispered, dizzily. He rose, tumbling her off his lap as if she were a kitten. “I had no business coming here tonight,” he said. “No earthly business. I'm sorry. Diana. I’d better run along.” She faced him, swaying. But answered nothing. He kissed her quickly and was gone. Before Diana opened her eyes the next morning her mind was at work. There must be some solution. Seton was right when he had said they could not go on. But what could she do about it? It was absolutely necessary that she continue studying with him. She could not go on without him. Her future as an actress rested in his hands. Yet she told herself that she would have loved him if he had been a day laborer, working on the streets. She would have given everything up and followed him anywhere. But she was faced with no such simple problem. If she gave him up it meant also surrendering her career. The two were hand in hand. And what would life be with neither her work nor Seton? Drawing the covers higher about her chin, she cried, “I can’t do it unless I go away. I might go to New York and start all over, again.” With her diminished capital, and bereft of his interest, the thought was far from alluring. Besides she had read somewhere that he who loves and runs away will live to love another day. Or was it fight? Sometimes the two were synony-

mous. But not in this case. Oh, dear no! Impossible for them to ever have the misunderstandings and quarrels she had had with Arthur. Or Louis!— The thought of Louis made her smile. What children they had been. Then her face grew grave as she realized for the first time how unreasonable she had been with him. She could understand now how Louis must have felt. But Arthur was different. Strangely enough she still resented Arthur’s claims. Resented them so deeply that she decided she must be free of them. Her marriage was a legal chain Tfiiich must be released. It had not bothered her greatly before, but she knew now it must be definitely broken. Before she left the apartment she had called Arthur and made an appointment to lunch with him. To Be Continued
