NEW FORD CAR TO BE SHOWN . AT FAIRGROUND V Local Dealers Arrange Exhibit to Open Next Friday. Four-wheel brakes, standard se- * lective gear transmission, extraordinary acceleration, a speed of sixty miles an hour and more, a practically vibrationless engine and unusual beauty of line and color are among the outstanding features of the new Ford cars, first of which will be shown in many parts of the country Friday. The generator, oiling system, steering gear and rear axle are of new Ford design, it is announced. Its forty-horse-power engine has been so designed that it runs twenty to thirty milec an hour en & of gappline. This eer, which is to succ~ ,1 the famous Model TANARUS, will be shown on Friday by Ford dealers in many of the larger cities of the country. In Indianapolis, photographs and descriptive charts of the new cars will be on display at dealers’ show rooms, where the public will be given the complete story of the new Ford car. All models of the new Ford line will be on display at the Auto Show building. State Fairground, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2-3-4. So far the new cars have been examined only by those who will have charge of the first showings and demonstrations. For months factory models of the new car have been undergoing severe performance tests in and around Detroit. One of these factory models recently made a run of 120 miles in 124 minutes. This run, it is said, was made on an ordinary paved highway near Detroit. Local dealers, commenting on the forthcoming show, said their first view of the new Ford car had substantiated Henry Ford's statement that “There is nothing quite like it in quality and price.” “Ford’s statement had prepared us for a surprise,” said a local dealer, “but the new Ford car is better even than we had hoped for. It is certain to make history in the automotive industry, just as its predecessor, the famous Model TANARUS, has made history for twenty years. We are proud of the new car and feel certain that its appearance and performance will attract unprecedented attention among automobile owners.” GIVES RADIATOR CHART FOR FREEZING WEATHER First onslaught of freezing temperatures finds many cars with broken radiators or cracked cylinder blocks, according to B. AUTO GROWTH GAINS Jordan Head Cites Four Convincing Facts. Four convincing facts tell an interesting story of the development and growth of automotive transportation, according to Edward S. Jordan, president of the Jordan Motor Car Company. 1. In spite of traffic congestion in big cities, statistics show that 64 % per cent of the passenger cars are owned on farms and in cities of less than 25,000 population. 2. A decline of $33,000,000 in total railroad passenger earnings for the first seven months of this year is attributed by railroad officials to the competition of motor busses and individual motor car transportation. '3. On freight hauls of less than ten miles, 85 per cent of the tonnage is carried by motor truck. Fifty-five per cent is trucked on trips of twenty to thirty miles. 4. An investigation conducted in two widely separated and typical American cities of medium size shows that 15 cents out of every $1 goes for automobiles and gasoline.

IT, S. TAXES ON BUSSES, TAXIS HIT ASUNFAIR National Auto Chamber to Fight for Removal in Next Congress. Bv Times Svccial NEW YORK, Nov. 30.—" Special war time levies by the Federal government on all forms of commercial transportation except the bus and taxicab have been lifted, and it is unfair to single out motor buses and taxicabs for further taxation in the form of the 3 per cent Federal excise tax,” declared Windsor T. White, chairman of the motor truck committee of the National Automomobile Chamber of Commerce, today. “The truck committee is planning a vigorous campaign to assist in* the movement to eliminate excise taxes on busses and taxicabs,” seid White. “The national association of motor bus operators, organized in the bus division of the American Automobile Association, will have the complete support of bus manufacturers in their efforts to obtain the repeal of this tax,” he said. "Inasmuch as only about $3,000,000 of revenue was raised during the last fiscal year by the bus tax and several hundred thousand dollars by the taxicab tax, the government cannot claim that the elimination of this tax is in any way prejudicial to its economy program. “The war excise tax on busses is a direct levy w’hich enters into the rates of fair paid by bus passengers all over the country. This tax is a burden upon almost 2,500,000 passengers carried by 80,000 busses.” Output Declines Automobile production for the month of September decreased 46,462 cars over the month of August. September production totaled 257,577 cars, of which 32,564 were trucks. High Cost if Roads Cuba has contracted for & highway project of 705 miles costing V?5,870,000, or $107,465 a mile. Os course, the motorist will pay at the rate of a 10-cent tax for each gallon of gasoline he buys. Rais Speed Limits The States of Washington and Oregon have increased their maximum speed limits, the former from 30 to 35 miles an hour and Washington from 30 to 4° miles an hour.

By SWEDE SWANSON ONE of the banes of this motoring age is the contrasting sight of a hiker crossing the country in the face of an ever thickening traffic of automobiles. It is. romantic and refreshing to hike miles on miles from town to town, and many there are who glory in it. But in their anxiety to break records, the youngsters who take to the road make driving a danger and a worry. For, regardless of the automobiles on the highways they travel, these youths fare bravely into the midst of them. They follow the right side of the road, rather than the left, and so let the approaching motorist worry over the lives of the walkers. C. S. Hoag, secretary of the Lincoln Highway, deplores the fact that these hikers are heralded as heroes wherever they go, rather than being sent home by the police. “It increases the tramp element in the coming generation,” he argues, and adds that it puts many a gray hair in motorists who try to avoid running over the youngsters. Motor organizations of the country are discouraging cross-country hiking, because of the moral as well as physical danger to the hikers. The way the individual motorist can help is by refusing rides to such youth. nun An* engine that runs perfectly, once started, but that gives trouble starting, may be handicapped by a choke that does not close off all the air. It is not unusual for the choke wire to slip at the carburetor end, so that when the driver thinks it is working it is really only partly on the job. For a quick start, unless the carburetor mixture is very rich, it is necessary to close off all the air to the carburetor. This means that

the choke must be 100 per cent right. ’* Stie reverse condition also causes tof trouble. If theCchoke control does not fully open the choke valve, the engine will not be able to draw the full amount of gas it needs and there -will be trouble. Gas mileage will be low and carbon deposit rapid. The engine is certain to be logy and will run unevenly in traffic. u n u MacManus Incorporated, national advertising counsel, announces the opening of an office in Toronto, with Ray C.
