DIA N A<
BEGIN HEBE TODAY When Diana ParweU’s mother overhear* talk of love between her daughter and a schoolboy friend, he is fearful that Diana will "go wrong” like her sister, Vivian, who ran away from home four years before. So the mother hastens a marriage of Diana with Arthur Vane, some years older, a successful San Francisco lawyer. Diana is only 18 and goes into marriage believing "Arthur is so different from other men he always will be satisfied with merely spiritual love.” He respects her reserve, as a younger girl s natural shyness, at first. But after many months of loveless wedded life he tells her she has wrecked his life. Some time after her mother dies, Diana leave* Arthur and finds her long-lost sister, Vivian, preparing for a trip to New York. Diana rents a room at the home of Mrs. Burton, widowed friend of Diana's mother, and enrolls in Seton’l School of Acting. At the school she meets, among others, Beachy, a pretty girl. Paul Ruthven, a young doctor who was gassed in the war. Diana and Paul become good friends. Paul tells her he love* her, then, when she kindly repulses him, says they must not rehearse any more in his rooms. ' Paul becomes ill and Diana stays at his bedside one night, while he is delirious. When she returns home next day Mrs. Burton is furious and Arthur, whom Mrs. Burton had telephoned, reproaches Diana. Diana leaves Mrs. Burton’s. Paul dies after an operation and Diana returns to school. She decides her stage name will be Diane Dore. NOW GO ON WITH THE STOBY CHAPTER XXIX SEPTEMBER came gloriously to San Francisco. Everything seemed permeated with a quickened, consciousness of the god-like sun. The warmth and color soaked through the soul of Diane Dore. She felt herself pressed against the earth by heavy, tender hands. It gave her a heady feeling. She was gqrgeously alive. There was more than one reason for it. The first part of her training at Seton’s was completed. She found that the lonely evenings, spent in reading and study, had repaid her a hundredfold. Her voice had gained depth and quality. Her technique had become routine. She was able to come down stage without actually thinking which foot should come first. A little woodenly yet, but beyond being called by Mamzelle. She had sustained many bruises practicing her stage falls. But she could enter, panting. “Here, here is the letter ...” and sink, fainting, ,-to the floor, without a false move. For the first time in her life she knew the perfect co-ordination of mind and body. Her skin was like satin. Her muscles tempered steel. She spoke of It to Klesalek. “It Is actual physical pleasure to do these things now. To walk to the guillotine, for instance. ...” He was smiling. “You know what I mean. The way we do for Mamzelle. To know that I can do it perfectly, as often as I
Kidney Pains and Rheumatism Gone Farmer Is Able to Work Again, After Years of Illness. Trying to work a farm, while crippled and in constant pain for several years, was the hard task faced by Matt Reiland, Route 4, Stockton, 111. He tells of his recovery, in the following letter: “I suffered from kidney trouble and rheumatism for Several years. My back ached so I could hardly bend. My head ached, and the pains in my limbs were very severe. I was anemic, my blood was poor, and I was so weak and dizzy that my farm work was almost impossible. But today, life looks entirely different. My rheumatism Is all gone and there are no kinks or pains in my back. My kidney trouble has disappeared, and my sleep is not disturbed. I am eating hearty meals, and feel fine in every way. It feels wonderful to have good, rich blood coursing through my veins. I trace all this change to the day I started taking Viuna. My wife and son are both taking it now, with wonderful results. Viuna has surely been a Godsend to our family.” Vtuna bets promptly on sluggish jewels, lazy liver and weak kidneys. It purifies tbe blood, clears the skin, restores appetite and digestion, and bring* new strength and energy to tbe whole body. Take a bottle on trial. Then If you're not glad you tried Viuna, your money will Be refunded. $1 at druggist*, or mailed postpaid by Iceland Medicine Co u Indianapolis, Ind, & VIUNA The Wonder Medicine

wish, gives me a poise which is perfectly delightful.” “I know, my dear. That Is the value of technique. But the details of it must be forgotten. It’s time now for you to forget.” “You understand that I am trying?” “Indeed, I do. Your effort the last few months has been most satisfactory. Mr. seton and I have been discussing you. You are to start private lessons with him next week. But from now on your work will not be so tangible.” “I don’t understand.” “The thing you are lacking is a spiritual quality which is not easily acquired.” She was still puzzling over this as she left his studio. Half way down the stairs she met Nadine, a Nadine more beautiful than ever, with her soft hair crushed Into an adorable little hat “Diana, you’re the very person I’ve been looking for.” “What have I done now?” “Nothing. It’s what you’re going to do. Let me take you home so ye can talk.” Diana did not know Nadine intimately. But she had always admired her beauty. It was such unspoiled, sheer perfection. Like the flushed loveliness of a sleeping child. As they entered Nadine’s car, she was surprised at the richness of its dark upholstering. She had not understood that the girl was wealthy. / Had thought of her rather as emerging from some cheaply furnished apartment, with perpetually disordered rooms. The kind of place where every cent would go for clothes to adorn Nadine’s slender back. “Is your car new?” she asked as they drew away from the curb. “Yes. Listen, Diana, I’m not going to beat around the bush. You’re different from the other girls at Seton’s. I felt that even before I heard that you’d been married.” “Oh, you've heard that?” “Heavens, yes! Klesalek told the teachers and it soon leaked out. I’m only mentioning it to explain why I feel that I can come to you. You should be more broad-minded than the rest.” ' “Well, perhaps ... I suppose I have had more experience.” “That’s what I mean. Now, this is my situation. I have a friend who is perfectly wonderful to me. But he is married.” “Do you mean you are accepting things from him?” Nadine frowned. “Not the way you mean. He has such faith In my future that he wants to help me. Diana, can you realize what that means to a girl who has absolutely no backing? "'l came here from San Ber-

nardino. I worked in a beauty shop with no notion of doing anything else until my friends sent my picture in to a beauty contest. I won first place and used the money to start at Seton’s “I had no Idea it would take me more than two or three month. Now my money is gone and I’ve had just enough training to realize how much I need. This summer I was desperate. ' “I even went to Hollywood and tried to get a job as an extra. But it was no use. When I came back I had made up my mind to return to my manicuring. Then I met this man. He is older than I am and has one child. But he wants me to let him do everything he can for me. “He calls it a gamble op my career. “If I make good, he wins. If not, he loses. He insists that Is all there Is to it. Am I wicked to want to accept?” A year ago Diana would have answered unequivocally. But many things had happened in that year. “I don’t know,” she replied. “Perhaps you are. Yet if it were my only chance of getting on. . . . Please, Nadine, don’t put the responsibility of deciding on me.” “I’m not. I took this car a month ago. And anything else Jim Devlin wishes to offer me, as a part of his gamble, I intend to accept.” “Then what’s the idea?” “I’m coming to that. He has insisted on renting an apartment fpr me. A lovely, sunny little place with two bedrooms. But he doesn’t want me to live there alone.” “Are you going to ask me to come and live with you?” “Diana, will you? It will be perfectly all right. Jim never comes for long. And it won’t cost you a cent.” The temptation was strong. Klesalek had told her the school was not interested in her private life save as it affected her work. There was no one else to care. If Nadine had misrepresented the situation she could leave. After all, it was not her responsibility. Nadine’s blue eyes were anxious. “Thank you,” Diana said, suddenly. “I’ll do It.” Bhe found the apartment all Nadine had described it. The bedrooms opened from each side into a living room, attractively furnished in ivory and hazy blue.

It was a restful room with Just enough furniture. A picture or two. The smallest of grand pianos. Deeply upholstered chairs, a table piled with books and magazines, and everywhere glass bowls filled with flowers. A perfect setting for the Jewel of Nadine’s loveliness! "Do you like it?” "Absolutely! Is this your idea or Jim’s?” "Jim’s, of course! He selected everything. He culls it my background.” Diana was conscious of a growing curiosity in Jim. He came for half an hour the evening after she had moved. She saw a man of middle age, tall, thin, with keen eyes and a sensitive mouth, which drooped at the comers. A mobile face! "Easily hurt,” she decided, “with a trace of irritability, but no slightest hint of the vulgar.” She sighed with relief. He might have been so different. At the same moment she became aware that he was studying her. “What have you decided?” she ventured. “Absolutely satisfied! And you?” “I am awfully pleased, Mr. Devlin. The apartment is charming.” "It is nice, isn’t it? Just the place for a little bird to learn to fly.” He turned to Nadine. “How about you? Do you still like It?” “You know, I’m perfectly delighted, Jim." , “Nothing you’d want changed?” “Not one single thing." His eyes brightened. "That’s fine. I’m not accustomed to having my tastes so appreciated. How is the music coming? Will you sing for me?”

Like a phantom ship the sturdy little craft owned by a Pensacola firm has disappeared in the Gulf of Mexico, after leaving for the fishing grounds off Campeche Banks. Coast Guard boats have failed to find a trace of the schooner. Radio has failed to connect with the craft. On Sept. 24, the Clara M. Littlefield left her home port. A month later there came word from the schooner, indirect. The Glenpool, a steamship reported sighting the vessel eighty miles south of South Pass.
