New Ensembles
BY HEDDA HOYT United Press Fashion Editor PARIS, Nov. 24.—1n continuing to describe the costumes shown by Jean Patou at his recent fall fashion review, we must not neglect to mention the daytime ensembles, including long cloth coats, matched by scant skirts and worn with silk knitted sweatets. Some of these are simply adorable! Asa rule, Patou clings to black for such street costumes although considerable beige, brown and gray are shown. The ensemble coat is almost invariably straight as to line, except for the slight flare at the over-lap-ping front side. Even this side flare is omitted in many instances and the coat is straight-lined with fur extending from neckline to hem down the fronts. Black With Black With a black broadcloth ensemble coat, a black skirt of exceeding scantiness is worn, and a silk knitted sweater, often striped in metallic thread, adds a finishing touch. The sweater is generally white or beige and may have appliques of black cloth or silk applied in diagonal effect, or in foliage design. Skirts are not quite as short in Paris as they are in America at present. One notices this fact at all the smart showings. The evening ensemble as shown by Patou is perfection this season! Many gorgeous velvet coats collared and cuffed in harmonizing dyedfox are combined with gowns of velvet, lace or chiffon. Harmony Required The gown of the evening ensemble must harmonize in color although fabric harony is not accented as a rule. The velvet coats have wide sleeves and are of wrap-about type as a rule. Some of them are beaded although most models are plain. Among the wrap colors are amber, old tapestry hues, faint greenish blues, purplish reds and flesh beige tones. Fox furs are dyed in the coat tones in many instances. Tweed street suits are also included in the Patou display and shades of beige and gray predominate. Suits are very simple in line and are femininely tailored. Pox fur pieces usually accompany them. Felt hats, similar in outline to the African headdress hats of last season, are worn with them. There is a tendenecy to slope the crown of the turban higher cowards the rear. Nature Study Hike The Nature Study Club made hike No. 403 today. The members of the club will meet at Cumberland Baptist Church for dinner, after which the president, C. J. Buchanan, will lead the walk along Buck Creek to Julietta. Corps Inspection Alvin Hovey W. R. C., No. 196, will have inspection at 2 p. m. Friday at 512 N. Illinois St. Noon lunch will precede the inspection. Mrs. Gertrude Kinnick will be hostess.

Woman’s Day
BY ALLENE SUMNER They’re carrying in groceries to the Governor of Texas and his wife because they can’t live on his $4,000 a year salary. The East Texas Chamber of Commerce recently held a “pound party” for Governor and Mrs. Dan Moody, bringing in pounds of rice and beans and macaroni and sugar and tea. I can imagine a storm of protest from thousands of $lB-$25-a-week families as they say, “wish I had the chance to try living on $4,000 a year!” It seems foolish to even need to remind them that it’s one thing to live as Mike Brown and it’s another thing to support the gubernatorial mansion. Salaries paid our public men are so low in comparison with what is demanded of them that rarely anyone but a man of fortune can afford to take a public post, which is exactly why the average man without fortune can not get the representation to which he is entitled. Nobody but Calvin Coolidge could come out of the White House with any of his $75,000-a-year salary. tt tt ■ a Odd Marriage The Hendrik Willem-Van Loon marriage is causing as much commotion as Fannie Hurst’s of some years ago when it became known that that lady had been happily married for several years, but that she lived in one place and her husband in another. The Van Loons are likewise spending their honeymoon in two separate apartments with engagements made and accepted with one another when it is mutually agreeable. tt tt tt Old Woman of Tribe Mussolini’s prosecution and jailing of the Mafisti of Sicily has brought to light the “Queen of the Mafista,” old mother Giuseppa Sal-
vo, 62, mother of four sons and two daughters caught in the raid. The queen acted as chief. Members of the tribe had to get her permission to marry and she would rarely permit marriages between any but those within the band. She fixed ransom prices, divided booty, and decreed punishments. These “Old Mothers of the Tribe” are becoming too rare to satisfy my dramatic sense. More power to ’em! tt tt tt Reasons They explain that they both had leases on their particular apartments which could not be broken unless they could afford to pay rent as long as the leases held, which they couldn’t; that each apartment was too small for both of them and that, besides, they’d appreciate each other more if they didn’t have too big an over-dose of one another. Van Loon, a writer, liked to be up at 7. His wife, Frances Goodrich, sleeps until noon. Ergo— Yes, the reasons all sound very convincing and sensible, still—some old-fashioned souls will ask, “why marry at all if home building isn’t a part of the marriage? Why not just continue to have dates?” Cape Coat Anew version of the evening cape is a flared skirt section of the coat, with the top a fitted cape, with moleskin edging the sleeve slits.

Noted Wife Aggravating to Husband BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON In case you may have forgotten, a young fellow by the name of Lyle Womack is the husband of Ruth Elder, favor.s aviatrix. This man hrs announced to the world that he is fond of h!s wife and hopes she will return hewne to Panama with him after all the plaudits about her have ceased. Although he does not say it in so many words, it is quite likely that he would be very much pleased if she could outgrow her passion for airplanes and transfer them to such a mundane thing as a husband. Viewing Mr. Womack with unprejudiced eyes, there is certain to be a little feeling of pity within our hearts for husbands of his type. The face that they are growing more numerous each year does not lessen our sympathy for them. Men Face Troubles The twentieth century man has far more tribulations to face than any other has ever imagined. And being a husband these days sometimes takes on the nature of a real achievement. Many men are afflicted with wives who are hot after careers and fame, like Ruth Elder. Or they are tied to women who pos-i-tive-ly will not give up their maiden names. Or they are irritated with trial marriages, and must needs contend with a good many fool ideas connected with the new freedom for women until it is a wonder that some of the poor things ever live through it. And let us remember that the men are going through a period of bitter readjustment. Whereas never before has their sex had to play second fiddle in the family, today many of them are mere understudies for their wives. Who Should Lead Whether nature really intended the male to be the leader with the female playing the part of subordinate, who can truthfully say? The thing we can be perfectly sure about is that the masculine element is gradually subsiding into the background while the women rush out and grab the laurels, barter in the market place and put on the toga of authority. This condition may be good for a man’s soul, but it is hard on his vanity. Nobody knows exactly what we should do about it. However, it seems obvious that the men should bestir themselves before it is forever too late.
