WORKERS MAKE OUT PROGRAM FOR SEAL SALE Headquarters Has Received 15,000,000 as County Allotment. Marlon County Tuberculosis Association workers today made final preparations for the annual Christmas seal sale, whidh begins Thursday. Fifteen million seals have been received at headquarters, 1217 MeyerKiser Bank Bldg. Association President Fred A. Sims announced appointment of Association Secretary Mrs. James Barrett as chairman of a special committee from the board of directors to direct the sale. Other members are Dr. Alfred Hqpry and Michael E. Foley. All Groups Aid Civic and fraternal organizations, Parent-Teacher associations, labor unions, women’s and luncheon clubs will aid in the campaign. From the sale the association hopes to finance development of the proposed child nutrition camp on an eight-acre tract near Bridgeport, purchased early this year. Other association health activities are additional fresh air schools, better nursing for the tubercular, increased health in industry and a county-wide educational health program among children, Sims announced. “Since 1913, when Marion County Tuberculosis Society actively began Christmas seal sales and an antituberculosis program here, the tuberculosis death rate has been cut from 224.7 a 100,000 to 106.1 a 100,000,” Sims said. Save 200 Annually Saving approximately 200 litfes annually has been the big work of the Christmas seal here. “Program of prevention and cure for 1928 is a large one. Without generous support by citizens of this county that program must be curtailed. If curtailed, we lose much of the progress in life saving already made. It is good business for Indianapolis and Marion county citizens to buy Christmas seals this year.” Einar Hoelbell, Danish mail clerk, first conceived the idea of selling Christmas stamps to relieve the suffering of tuberculosis patients, Sims stated. First nation-wide tuberculosis Christmas seal sale was in Denmark in 1904. Miss Emily Bissell, of Delaware, first applied the idea in this country, after reading a magazine article by Jacob Riis, New York social service leader, explaining the plan in Denmark. Thanksgiving Services to Be Held in the Local Churches

SARATOGA IS AFLOAT Largest U. S. Vessel Cost $45,000,000. Bu United Press CAMDEN, N. J., NOV. 22.—United States Steamship Saratoga, largest of Uncle Sam’s naval vessels, left its “crib” at the American BrownBoveri shipyards today. Easing from her berth at low tide, the $45,000,000 airplane carrier was pulled into the Delaware channel and anchored to await high tide. Sixteen tugs provided power on this maiden cruise. Although short, it was most dangerous, with possibilities of great damage. Hull of the huge craft more than half spanned the Delaware River. The Saratoga will go into dry dock at League Island Navy yard, where submarine signal apparatus will be installed and stores taken aboard. This work will take six weeks. The feet of English women ave growing larger. Four used to be the average size; now it is five.
