MEET CHARACTERS OF “BROADWAY” Have asked a representative of “Broadway” to answer a few questions. He did in the following manner: How to write a successful play has been a subject studied by every embryo playwright. “Broadway,” which comes to English’s the week of Nov. 21, is without doubt the most successful American drama that has been written in many years. “Abie’s Irish Rose” is the only play that can be compared with it in the matter of gross intake, but, unlike “Abie,” critics have been

unanimous in declaring that “Broadway” is pretty well 100 per cent perfect drama. Budding-playwrights might therefore take pote of the ingredients of “Broadway,” which was properly prepared for public consumption within a setting that depicts the private party room of a New York night club or cabaret. The characters are as follows in “Broadway:” Nick Verdis—a mercenary Greek who is the proprietor of the Paradise Night Club. Roy Lane—brash, egotistical young “hoofer” leader of the chorus girls of the cabaret. A dancer who dreams of the days when his name will be in “lights,” although the chances are he will never reach that vaudeville pinnacle. Katie—a trim ankled, doll-faced cigarette girl who can “wangle” a tip much bigger than the price of the goods. / Joe—a slouchy, coin - jingling waiter who may see all but can be trusted to know nothing. Mazie Smith—a chorus girl who “knows her onions” if men can be so classified in these slangy days. Ruby—a sardonic type of chorine who never ceases her wrangling. Pearl--the vengeful type of woman, capable of better things. Grace and Ann—other types of the “merry merry.” “Billie” Moore—the newcomer in the chorus, beloved of the “hoofer.” Steve Crandall—a homicidal hijacker in a dinner jacket. “Porky” Thompson—a benevolent looking bootlegger but in bad company. Dolph—“ Steve’s” man Friday. Dan McCorn—representing the homicide squad honestly. Benny, Larry and Mike—visiting gunmen from Chicago. next week. The management deviating from the usual policy of a mid-week change of program for the purpose of presenting the Mix picture which is heralded as the best vehicle Mix has had in a long time, it was announced. Gerald Beaumont wrote the story, a dramatic tale of the Texas Rangers in which Mix is cast as Tom Morley, “Phantom Falcon” of the Rangers who disguises himself and holds up a stage coach so that he may get into the lair of the bandits around whom the plot centers. Marjorie Daw, Duke Lee, Francis McDonald, Lee Shumway and others are in tjpe cast. Other program features will include a cartoon comedy, “Alice’s Auto Race,” and first episode of a new serial, “The Isle of Sunken Gold” which embraces ten episodes of daring adventures in the South Seas. The first episode is called “The Ship of Fire.” Anita Stewart is starred 'in the serial which also features “Duke” Kahanamoku, world’s champion swimmer, and the mysterious “missing link” known as “Devil Ape of Bombo.”
