A SERMON WITHOUT WORDS IS HEARD Edward Rechlin, Using a Pipe Organ as a Pulpit, Preaches the Greatest Spiritual Beauty in Recital at Meridian Street M. E. Church. By WALTER D. HICKMAN Turning a pipe organ into a pulpit and “preaching” a sermon without words, Edward Rechlin, organist in recital, flooded the Meridian Street M. E. Church'auditorium last night with marvelous spiritual beauty. This wordless sermon was done in a language that all people know and for over an hour those present heard spiritual beauty as .expressed in soul melody.
The Rechlin recital wa? different than any I have ever attended because his program was organ-music of Bach and contemporaries. Before the organist appeared, it was announced that this would be a “different concert” because of the spiritual message behind the compositions. The request was made that there be no applause because the organist appreciated and understood the presence of those at the recital. It also was announced if we were not too tired that after the program was given, Rechlin would give an extra number. No one was "too tired” and this great player of Bach gave an extra number. We do not have many organ recitals of this nature and importance city. Rechlin in such recitals keeps the spirit and atmosphere of the church. He made a holy hour last night of church organ music. The spiritual beauty of Bach as well as his technical perfection was wonderfully displayed by Rechlin in “Adagio E Minor,” “Great G Minor Fugue” and the Shbrt Chorale-Prelude. Here were voices "singing,” so great was the mastery of Rechlin in projecting the theme of Bach. Among the worjcs of contemporary composers of Bach were those of Brunkhorst, Ritter and Boehm. The novelty of the program was Rechlin’s improvisation of “Beautiful Savior.” Here we had the effect of the chimes of the organ, blended into a fabric of spiritual wealth. The organ never faltered under the touch of Rechlin. He i3 a great artist and one who knows how to capture the spirit and the beauty of Bach. This beautiful concert was pre-
