MACY MALOTT. VICE PRESIDENT, TO LEAVE BANK Indiana National to Lose Officer Who Started as Messenger Boy. Macy W. Malott, 4250 Washington Blvd., tendered his resignation as vice president of the Indiana National Bank to the board of directors at noon today. It was accepted. Although Malott resigned in order to devote his time to other interests, he has made no definite plans for the immediate future, he said. He will retain his holdings in the bank. Malott joined the staff of the bank, organized by his father, Volney T. Malott, in 1865, at the age of 15, as an errand boy. He has held since that time successive positions up to the vice presidency. In that office he has been connected with the commercial paper buying department for over twenty years. Many companies with which lott has dealt expressed regret that he is severing his connections with the bank. The Indiana National Bank is a successor to the State Bank of Indiana, founded in 1834, one of the earliest and most widely known banks of the Middle West. The present organization was effected in 1865, the year when national banks were first chartered. Only three banks in the United States weathered the panic of 1867 without suspending specie payments —the Indiana National Bank, the Chemical National of New York and the State Bank of Kentucky at Frankfort. Total resources of the Indiana National Bank in 1883. when Malott, as a boy, entered its employ, were $700,000. This figure has increased fifty times to the total resources of $35,000,000. CITY EMPLOYES PAID Checks Are Handed Out to Workers One Day Late. Today was pay day for 2,500 city employes. Checks were being distributed at the city hall one day late. The $125,000 semi-monthly payroll was delayed by refusal of Edward A. Ramsey, city treasurer, to honor the signature of Sterling R. Holt as city controller until mandated to do so by Superior Judge Joseph Milner. Ramsay signed the checks Tuesday. The West Newton Company joined in the request. The petition points out that present calls are unnecessarily long and wasteful of service. Kirk McKinney, Smith Harlan, Linton A. Cox and J. S. Cruse. An automobile driven by L. J. O’Connell, 1125 N. BALLROOM IS SAFE, FINDING OF ENGINEERS (Continued from 1) lowest rate given to any amusement place in this city. The statement of the directors to the public says: “The rumors and gossip concerning the Indiana Theater and ballroom building have become so persistent that the board of directors feels called upon to issue a state‘ment based upon the reports of experts that the building is absolutely safe. Stories Called Absurd “We are not certain whether we have heard all the stories in circulation, but some of them are that the building was condemned, that placards were posted upon the premises to the effect that people entered at their own risk, that the ballroom floor had sunk anywhere from four to fourteen inches, and that certain parts of the balcony in the theater were roped off because they were unsafe. “The first two of these stories axe so absurd as scarcely to warrant an answer. The building not only has not been condemned but it has been praised for its excellence of construction and design, by the public building authorities and pronounced by them to be absolutely safe.s “That portion of the ballroom floor which is used for dancing was built five inches lower than the concourse or promenade surrounding the same. It is in the same perfect condition as on the day of the opening. Avery small portion of the theater balcony, involving about six seats, was roped off for several weeks, but merely because this was the place selected by our consulting engineers for installation of a device to test the range of deflection usually present in buildings of steel and reinforced concrete. Tested by Experts “When the rumors and gossip first reached out ears, we determined to spare no expense In having the building examined by experts In whom we and the public could have full confidence. “The device above mentioned was installed by one of these experts and though we realized that its presence and consequent roping off of a few seats might tend to spread the gossip, we left it there until the facts were established. “The experts whom we employed are well known in their profession. Each made his own investigation, independent of any of .the others. They have not even seen one another’s reports. All reached the same conclusion, that the building is absolutely safe. Called Entirely Safe “Their reports are largely technical and lengthy and do not lend themselves readily to publication in full. They contain expressions such as 'The greatest number of people which can be packed into the theater and the ballroom can not possibly load it up to the stresses for which it is designed.’ “ ‘I want to assure you that there is not the slightest doubt that your building is structurally sound.’ “ ‘I am pleased to say that I find the structural design accurate, the structure itself •'well built, with no sign of weakness anywhere, and therefore the building amply safe for the uses for which it was built.’ “ ‘The Indiana is designed and constructed safely, and it can not be overloaded by any crowd that could be assembled in it.’ "Any on;- sufficiently interested may read them word fer word. There never was any doubt In our minds as to what their verdict would be, because we did not blindly erect a building representing so large an investment, but had the plans and specifications thoroughly examined by competent engineers before building began. Vibrations No Warning “What so-called vibrations may be felt in a building of this size and character of construction naturally is a fact. If such buildings were strictly rigid, they would fie unsafe. Our experts say that the exact cause of vibrations in buildings has not been established scientifically. "All we know is that they must be present. The purr of a motor, and our building is honeycombed with motors that operate our organ, orchestra lifts, elevators, ventilating, cooling and heating machinery—will cause vibrations. “The heavy notes of a musical instrument, such as our organ, will do the same. However plainly this may be felt, the actual motion or deflection in our building recorded by accurate measuring devices does not exceed one-fiftieth of the normal allowable motion. Others Are Maligned “Fortunately or unfortunately, depending upon one’s viewpoint, ours is not the only theater building that has been talked about in the same manner. One of the largest theaters in Chicago and one of the largest theaters In Bos‘on were the subject of the same kind of gossip, which, of course, was as unfounded as that concerning our building. Are Independent Units “Right here it may be said that our ballroom and our theater balcony, so far as carrying capacity and safety are concerned are as independent of each other as though they stood on separate parcels of ground. Each is carried-separately on steel and reinforced concerete. “The fact that the ballroom is on the sixth floor is of no significance. If it were on the sixteenth or even the fifteenth floor, it would be as safe as on the ground floor. It must be known generally that even swimming. pools carrying as muen as 250,000 gallons of water, constantly in motion and weighing more than two million pounds have been installed in the upper floors of modern athletic club buildings. “Our ballroom floor was intentionally built with a cushion under it, to make it springy. This makes dancing easier than on a perfectly rigid floor. Our engineers have advised us that if it were possible to pack more than 13,000 people into
f x X-ljlli IN juiAlx xxir GJLLo ±x.ui-Ljo
this room and let them all dance, the room would still be absolutely safe. Is Well Reinforced- “ This is four* times as many people as comfortably can dance in this room. Our theater balcony is built like a suspension bridge supported on the two sides by huge reinforced concrete pillars Independent of the ballroom floor and at the rear by a heavy reinforced concrete wall. “It is designed to carry a load far in excess of any number of persons that can be accommodated there. The ballroom as well as the theater repeatedly have contained capacity crowds. "There is absolutely no evidence of weakness anywhere in the building and, of course, there could not be, because the building is designed properly and correctly. "As directors of this enterprise, we take pride in having erected in our city a monumental structure that will stand long after the natural expectancy of life of even the youngest among us. We also feel that we have a right to take pride in our management of this enterprise. - Given Many Compliments “It offers clean and wholesome entertainment to many thousands of our fellow citizens. From near and far we have been complimented upon the beauty of the theater and the ballroom. Os the latter we truthfully can say that it is unexcelled in magnificence anywhere in t ile United States. “We are making this detailed statement to our friends and patrons because we feel they are entitled to the truth and because we think the public knows we would not make any statement not absolutely true and supported by responsible authority.”
