PREOiGTS END OF DISEASE IN NEXTSOYEARS Leader Thinks Surgery Will Make Undreamed of Advances. Bu United Press CHICAGO, Nov. 4. Virtual elimination of numerous infectious and contagious diseases which have caused the death of millions and improvement of surgical methods to repair the damage man suffers from the machines he has created will be developments of medicine within fifty years, according to Dr. Gustavus M. Blech of Chicago. Dr. Blech, a leader in the work of the American College of Physical Therapy, he was asked by the United Press to visualize the status of his profession in 1977 in the light of present accdlnplishments. “Fifty years,” he said, “is a small space of time, but it is enough for America to overcome its youthfulness and for old and staid Europe to overcome not only the World War, but the next war, which shall have been fought long before the period we have in mind. Eradicate Many Diseases "Medicine by that time will have continued to sacrifice the intei\sts of its followers by creating situations which will make individual services of healers needed less and less. Just as we have virtually eradicated smallpox, typhoid fever, typhus, pest and yellow fever by hygienic measures and by vaccination and inoculmion, so will penumonia, scarlet fever, measles and other infectious and contagious diseases become of historic interest only. “The constant struggle against tuberculosis will have gained great headway, partly by medical advance and partly by legislative measures, which will lay the foundation for a future race free from the taints of heredity. Eugenics will develop as a preventive measure which will keep many hospital beds empty. Sanely Nourished Race 'To this must be added the development of a comparatively new science, dietetics, which will make a more sanely nourished race, also a sturdier race.” Increased study of the Internal glands of the body will be a principal development pf internal medicine, Dr. Blech believes. This development, he forecasts, also will eliminate certain fields of surgery. “Goiter, chronic inflamations, surgical tuberculosis, blood poisoning and similar affections will be treated successfully by organic products and antitoxins,” he explained. Advances in Surgery "On the other hand, surgery will have made great advances in remedying the results of injuries. Just as the increase of machinery in industrial life demands an increasing toll of victims, so will the art of surgery improve to render individual aid. “This field will be given tremendous impetus by next year. Feats of surgery undreamed of in 1917 and 1918 will be performed at the front and at reconstruction hospitals.” Dr. Blech predicts that the struggle with cancer will still be unsolved in 1977.
ROYALTY GETS WEDDING GIFTS Naples Wiil See Brilliant Ceremony Saturday. Bn TJnited Prcsi NAPLES, Nov. 4.—Thousands of wedding presents, from jewels given by kings and queens to the simple gifts of humblest peasants, were arranged at the royal palace tc-day in preparation for the wedding Saturday of the Duke of Puglie, nephew of King Victor Emmanuel, and Princess Anne of Bourbon. A magnificent rope of pearls with a diamond clasp is the gift of the city of Naples to the bride, the daughter of the Due de Guise, claimant of the French throne. King Alfonso of Spain, who arrived yesterday for the wedding, is spending his time sightseeing. Accompanied by Crown Prince Humbert, the bride’s cousin, he embarked on the destroyer Francesco Nuilo and made an inspection of worships in the Naples district. In the party were the Duke of Genoa, the Duke of Pistoia, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Dir.o Grandi and members of the Neapolitan aristocrasy. Tomorrow’s wedding, to be the most brilliant affair since the war, will be solemnized by Cardinal Ascalesi, Archbishop of Naples, at the Church of St. Francis de Paul. Streets are gay with flags and bunting. Preparations are being made to control huge crowds along the streets through which the wedding precession will pass, as well as in San Ferdinonda Square, where a grand stand for two hundred thousand people has been erected. Jannings Starts to Work Again Emil Jannings is at work again on “The Street of Sin.” One week’s shooting of scenes was necessary to complete and fill out the film.
