‘BOOTLEG LOVE’ IS U. S. PERIL, SAYSUNDSEY Ex-Jurist Debates Plans to Save Marriage on West Coast. BY MAX STERN SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 3.—The American marriage system is break-, ing down and must be saved by radical changes in the laws relating to birth-control, divorce and alimony, declares Judge Ben B. Lindsey of Denver. He now is stirring the Pacific Coast in a series of debates with Rabbi Louis I. Newman of this city, drawing immense audiences and making himself the target of denunciation from pulpit and press. Suggest Three Reforms Judge Lindccy proposes to substitute “companionate” marriages by these three definite legal reforms: 1. Repeal of the “infamous” Comstock law that forbids the dissemination of birth-control information; 2. Laws permitting divorce by common consent in cases where there are no children, but only after a scientific commission is first appealed to in the effort to effect a reconciliation; 3. Removal of alimony clauses in divorce proceedings between childless couples, and basing all alimony on economic condition of the two parties. Bootlegging In Love “We Americans are otlegging in love,” said Lindsey. “Out of 30,000,000 boys and girls between 15 and 30, only 37 per cent are married! “Out of 10,000 young men between 20 and 31, 6,000,000 are bachelors. Don't tell me they arc all content. Fully 90 per cent of them are promiscuous in their sex life. “Last year in San Francisco there were 7,000 marriages and 4,200 divorces. In American cities there are from 400 to 600 divorces to every 1000 marriages! Favor Birth Control “The one-fourth cf the women in America who produce one-half of the children are being tricked into having children they neither want nor can afford to raise. “Dr. Catherine Emmett Davis, of the Rockefeller Institute, recently took a poll of 5,000 young married women. She fovud that 90 per cent believed in birth-control and 76.5 per cent were practicing it.” Dr. Newman agrees with Lindsey in urging free birth-control information and the consent decree in childless marriages. He opposes the third plank. Asks §IO,OOO Damages Bn Times Sveciitl MUNCIE, Ind., Nov. 3.—Elmer G. Schamp, a salesman, asks SIO,OOO damages in a suit filed here against Harold G. Ingersoll, local manufacturer, as the result of an auto collision Sept. 22 last, in which he alleges his nervous system was permanently impaired.
ftoritdose Ila Childs Continual r^ y dosing upsets children’s delicate stomachs. Vicks is applied externally and therefore cannot disturb the digestion.
