FIGHT TO PUT WEST ON U. S. POLITICAL MAP Curtis Candidacy, Forming of Borah-Norris Group Part of Move. BY PAUL R. MALLON United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Oct. 28.—“ Put the West on the political map”—is the slogan behind unusual events on Capitol Hill here. According to those who are taking a leading part in the movement, thrf slogan mspirea the formation of the Borah-Norris group, encouraged the announcement by Senator Curtis (Rep.), Kansas, that he will be a Republican presidential candidate and stirred the independent alliance of the Senate to an open campaign on the farm issue. Three Major Developments The movement to make the voice of the West heard in political matters will continue through the impending session of Congress. Overnight developments in the drive included: 1. Indication from the Independents that they would make no efford to oppose the Curtis candidacy, despite the fact that they never trained with Curtis in most legislative matters. ' 2. Announcement by Senator Borah (Rep.), Idaho, that he will not let any differences with Senator Norris (Rep.), Nebraska, interfere with his support of Norris for the 1928 nomination. 3. Issuance of the first of a series of campaign statements from Senator Brookhart (Rep.), lowa, pointing out the difficulties of the farmers. It represents the views of the Independent senatorial alliance of mid-westerners. The next statements will be on railroads and credits. Part of Same Movement While these three developments are not directly connected, they are all a part of the same movement. The idea is to make Republican leaders "hear” from the West, to make the West an important actor in the coming Congress and in the presidential . campaign. The Senators concerned in the matter say privately they are not so much interested in who shall be the nominee as in the necessity he be a western man. For that reason they are willing to encourage the Curtis movement in Kansas and elsewhere, even though most of the group publicly favors Norris.
