WEEKLY BOOK REVIEW The New Thing Is to Read Gilbert and Sullivan at Home Just as You Do Dickens apd Bill Shakespeare BY WALTER D. HICKMAN—
There is anew thing going the rounds and that is to read the beautiful light operas of Gilbert and Sullivan in your home just like you do the novels of Charles Dickens and the plays of William Shakespeare. Now this idea may seem rather like a dream, but I am sure that it is the truth. There is so much truth to it that D. Appleton & Cos., publishers of New York have recognized the fact. This firm has published “Gilbert and Sullivan at Home,” which contains the complete stories and the more popular songs of such operas as “Trial by Jury,” “The Sorcerer,” “Pinafore,” “Pirates of Penzance,” “Patience,” “lolanthe,” “Princess Ida,” “The Mikado,” and the like. They have been arranged either for singing or playing. I know that singing at home is becoming more and more popular. I know that many people sing with their radio and the phonograph has long been used in the home for this purpose. The other evening I was at the home of a friend and for more than an hour members of the party (excluding myself because I cannot carry a tune in a bushel basket’ sang parts of “Carmen” while it was played on a Brunswick. And the same is true with the piano in homes where the better music is appreciated. And that is one reason why the Appleton edition of “Gilbert and Sullivan at Home” will be so welcomed. I know that it is a pleasant way to spend an evening or at least a part of it to have a copy of this Gilbert and Sullivan edition on the piano and I am sure that it will not be long before the entire family will be singing or attempting to sing “Three Little Maids,” from “The Mikado.” Such books as these really brings anew day into the American home and one that will be deeply appreciated. Home life today is better than ever before and music in a home is just as important as clean table linen. Home is an institution and so is music, the right kind. “Gilbert and Sullivan at Home” will make many a home a happier and better place. Some Book News Have received the following news of books from Houghton Mifflin Company: Roland Pertwee, author of “Rivers to Cross” and “Gentlemen March” (Houghton Mifflin Company), is a playwright as well as an author, and has just come over from London to New York for the opening of his new play, “Interference.” “I think best of all I like to write and have a hand in the production of a play,” says Mr. Pertwee. “Then it is that all my earlier trades and trainings seem to combine and I become a composite being made of equal parts of author, actor and painter. But plays are such queer intractable things. They seldom go the way you want. They are always getting ] the bit in their teeth. They turn! nasty and have rows with you. ‘lnterference,’ which I wrote with Harold Deardon and which ran for six months at the St. James Theater without an empty seat was an exception. I never knew such an obliging play.” Among her lovers, George Sand counted Alfred de Mussett, Chopin and Prosper Merimee. Yet there were four others who occupied a conspicuous place in her affections. Elizabeth Schermerhorn, author of “Benjamin Constant,” Jias gathered them all into a book and given it the aopropriate title of “The Seven Strings of the Lyre.” Houghton Mifflin Company are Miss Schermerhorn’s publishers and almost simultaneous with the publication of “The Seven Strings of the Lyre,” • the John Day Company announces “George Sand: the Search for Love.” This spectacular woman continues to intrigue biographers as well as readers. The Macmillan expedition to the Far North, financed by Frederick H. Rawson of Chicago, is collecting for the Field Museum to enrich its departments of anthropology, botany, geology and zoology.
