SYNOPSES NANCY was pretty, a GAGE, and a blue-blood, even though she did live an the other side of the railroad tracks But Nancy just couldn't help falling in love and becoming engaged to handsome EBIC NELSON —whom she had met at Edith Harcourt’s, a rich school chum. Nancy’s pride causes her to break the engagement when she finds that Eric’s mother is a laundress, at the Harcourt s. Unable to stand the tension of her enforced separation from the man she loves. Nancy goes to live in San Francisco. Here she meets Jerry Hall, a man about town, whom Nancy starts going with when she hears that Eric is interested in another girl. . Nancy’s father is suddenly Injured and Nancy, now without funds is forced to take Jerry into her confidence. Nancy later meets Eric, at her request, and he tells her he is in love with another. They part in wrath and Nancy, lying awake in bed. later hears Chloris crying. CHAPTER XXXX. Lying awake duiing a night which seemed endless, Nancy decided on a definite course of action. From now on she would refuse every invitation which included Chloris and Eric. If Richard wished to see her, it would have to be alone. It wasn’t fair that Chloris, whose affection for all of them was so innocently sincere, should be made to suffer. She was crying now because she suspected Eric of a reawakened interested in the girl at her side. Nancy wished to comfort her, but she felt her sympathy would be a presumption. She must never give a sign that she knew Chloris was jealous. But she would stay away until gradually her faith in Eric returned. “The irony of it,” thought Nancy, "that she should think he cares for ■*ME!” She felt a real affection for the little figure crying so hopelessly. Chloris w£us like a child. One utterly unaccustomed to punishment. After a while her weeping softened into shuddering sighs. When she was asleep, Nancy sat up in bed and stared once more into the blank space of the open window. Vowing to be as tender with Chloris as she would be cruel to her former lover. Whole armies of conflicting emotions fought within her. And sh* rose at 6 feeling like a wrecked battlefield. Strewn with dead illusions, broken hopes and marred, distorted dreams But she dashed cold water on her drawn face, determined to fight with all the old enthusiasm. Nothing had “downed” her yet. Nothing ever should. Not even the cruel, lacerating thrusts of Eric Nelson. She greeted Richard gayly. He was wearing a disreputable pair of trousers and an old army sweater. And he cried, “This is the life,

Nancy. You’ll have to wait a few minutes. The coffee isn’t boiling.” “Don’t tell me you’re serving breakfast.” "You don’t think I’d drag you out without any, do you? Listen, woman, this is going to be a real hike.” “Let’s make a day of it,” Nancy suggested. “I’ll make some sandwiches and there are apples and milk chocolate.” His gray eyes danced. “Fine! The miss us. And Auntie’s a good sport. She’ll probably read all day.” He fried bacon and eggs, while Nancy made cheese and jam sandwhiches. \ “Mybe we should leave a note, Richard. W# don’t want them to wait dinner for us.” Chuckling, Richard took a piece of wrapping paper and scrawled: “Gone for the day. We crave solitude. Wishing you the same.— Richard.” “Sign your name, too, Nancy.” She obeyed and giggling like children they pinned it above the stove. A few minutes later they had left the clearing about the house and were following a trail whith led deeper and deeper into the woods. The sun rode high. The air was like wine. Exhilarating! Gradually their first eager stride settled into a measured pace. Sometimes they talked. But more often they were silent. And the healing, gentle beauty of it sank into Nancy’s heart. At noon they sat on top of the world and ate their lunch. A sea of tree tops tossed below. Far to the right a train puffed laboriously around the curve. Richard, stretched full length on the ground, said. “I’ve a surprise for you, Nancy, but I can’t decide when would be the most auspicious moment.” “No time like the present,” she smiled. “Particularly if the surprise is a pleasant one.” He sat up and took her hand. "I have a ring I’d like for you to wear.” “Oh, Richard, you shouldn’t have done that.” Loosen Up That Cold With Musterole Have Musterole handy when a cold starts. “I didn’t buy it, dear. It was my mother’s. The most beautiful ruby I have ever seen.” Reverently he drew it from his pocket and placed it in her palm, where it quivered like a drop of iblood, liquid, alive. “I want you to wear it, Nancy, but I’m not asking any promises you aren’t ready to give.” “I can’t promise anything yet, Richard.” “I know it, and I shan’t rush you. But you must realise how much you mean to me when I ask you to wear thiS.” “ “Oh, I do. And I appreciate it so awfully much. I WISH I could care.” “You will. You do more than ypu realize.” \ He slipped the ring on her finger and pressed it to his lips. “If the times comes—WHEN it comes—that you are ready to love me, will you tell me?” “Os course, Richard dear. But I haven’t any right to this in the meantime. What ewill Chloris think?” “The ring is mine.” “But won’t she think we’re engaged?” “Does it matter,” he asked quietly, “what ANYONE even Chloris thinks?” Wasn’t it, indeed, precisely what Nancy wished her to think? Here was convincing proof that she was no longer interested in Eric. An immediate solution of the problem she had tried to solve. Her position as Richard’s finance

would be as unassailabla as Eric’s. It rescued the trampled flag of her pride and flaunted it victoriously. . . Without binding her! She knew if she could ever care for anyone it would be Richard. The only thing lacking was the flame of desire which she did not wish to feel again. Which Eric had declared was not essential to love. Which could be, it seemed, quite unrelated to it. i’What’s your answer?” Richard asked, leaning forward anxiously. She met his eyes honestly. “I’ll wear it, Richard.
