STOCK PRICES BETTER AFTER HEAVYSELLING Tone Improves as Session Quiets in New York Stock Market.
Average Stock Prices
Average of twenty Industrials Thursday was 137!51. off 1.19. Average of forty was 183, off 1.48. Average of twenty rails bonds was 98.70, up .07. By United Press NEW YORK, Oct. 21.—Stock market transactions quieted down today, but prices improved after another period of heavy selling which carried leaders to new low ground on the reaction. Early liquidation was induced by the increase of $39,000,000 in brokerage loans which were reported after the close Thursday. Heavy selling orders came into the market overnight and until these were executed prices dropped sharply. After the call money renewal’ rate was posted today at 3% per cent, buying operations began to make themselves felt and soon the trend in issues recently under pressure was reserved. There were still a good many heavy losses through the list, giving the market an irregular appearance. Lehigh Valley was forced down more than 4 points in a wave of selling in the late afternoon, but other rails were firm following a bad break at the outset. Describing the market, the Wall Street Journal’s financial review said: Severe declines in the last few days appeared to have put the market in better technical shape and stocks developed a somewhat steadier tone today. This improvement appeared to result from an oversold condition rather than anything in the immediate outlook. Sweeping recessions on We:.:.icsday and Thursday took place on a volume of approximately 5,000,000 shares. Most of the traders regarded this turnover large enough to take of liquidation immediately overhanging the market. This induced short covering, which brought about rallying tendencies in industrial leaders. However, the recovery in the general list gained no particular aggressiveness. Trading fell off in volume when prices improved and aggregate transactions fell off sharply.

In the Cotton Market
(By Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK, Oct. 21.—The cotton market opened about 20 points lower this morning on easy cables and what looked like southern selling. Trade buying was sufficient to check the opening decline and a rally of 40 points was registered before a mixed demand from the trade, and speculative shorts were apparently satisfied. We have now passed the peak of the southern movement and the market therefore is a more attractive proposition. as the hedges in the market will be bought back as the cotton moves o the mills We do not advise anything like a continuously bullish position on the market. Nevertheless, contracts taken on declines are well protected by trade demand and therefore are not unlikelv to show profits. NEW ORLEANS High. Low. Close. Bn United Press CHICAGO, Oct. 21.—Grain futures were unsettled through most of today’s session on the Chicago Board of Trade and prices moved in a narrow range. Wheat opened lower than Thursday’s close. Liverpool cables were a little firmer than expected, but this influence was not enough to offset the . continued fine Canadian weather, and heavy marketings. The decline continued until mid-season when reports of large export business began to have a bullish effect. Export business was 1,500,000 bushels. 'Receipts were twenty cars and cash was Vs cent off. Com dropped to anew low early in the session but soon developed a firmer tone. Late in the session, hewever, all the losses had not been recovered. Receipts were 206 cars and casli 16 to 1 certt lower. Oats went to anew low, but Armed somewhat when local cereal interests bought considerably. Receipts were thirty-six cars and cash sales were unchanged. Provisions worked lower.
