sons killed and wounded was not known. The pirates, masquerading as passengers, attacked and took the vessel, which was manned by British officers. The Irene had a crew of 100 Chinese and carried eighty passengers. When the pirates headed the Irene toward Bias Bay (about seventy miles northeast of Bong Kong), two British submarines intercepted the vessel and demanded a halt. When the Irene did not halt, the submarines fired two shots into the engine room, disabling the ship. The vessel took fire and started to sink. Passengers and crew were rescued by the submarines and brought to Hong Kong.

solution of the old controversy between church and state. For years the Roman question, involving dispute between the Vatican and tho Italian government over lands and Jurisdiction, lay dormant. Then, a fortnight ago, Osservatore Romano, official organ of the Holy See, revived the controversy by indicating the time for settlement was ripe. Close observers predicted settlement was near, pointing out that Mussolini was anxious to succeed in ironing out church-state differences where other premiers had failed. The Fascist communique dashes that possibility. Even in a reduced form, Fascism will not tolerate papal temporal power.

OPEN NEW HOSPITAL Omaha Doctor Is Speaker at Coleman Ceremony. “Litres will be saved, mothers will be spared the life of invalidism and babies will be given a fair start in life through the work of this institution.” Thus spoke Dr. Palmer Findley, of Omaha, Neb., obstetrical specialist, at the opening Thursday of the William H. Coleman Hospital for women, located just west of the Robert Long Hospital on W. Michigan St. Dr. Findley declared the purposes of the institution are two-fold: To

provide the best possible service for maternity cases, and to serve in an educational capacity. Five hundred persons inspected the new addition to the Indiana University group of hospital buildings following the opening exercises. The hospital, fully equipped, is the gift of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Coleman, 1006 N. Meridian St., as a memorial to their daughter, Mrs. Suemma Coleman Atkins, who died in 1916.
