SHIPS PREPARED TO DO HEAVIEST TOURISTTRADE Estimate $26,000,000 Wiii Be Spent on Cruises This Winter. Figures of statisticians of the American Express Company for the winter cruise season of 1927 and 1928 indicate it will be the best since the inauguration of this method of seeing the world. Although but a few years ago voyages lasting from fifteen to 145 days aboard one steamship were unheard of, men, women and children from every State in the Union today, months before steamship books for the cruise season are opened, apply for reservations either for trips around the world, the Mediterranean, Africa or to the West Indies. Mere Women Than Men R. S. Ferguson of the company lias found that women are the most frequent passengers in winter. “They have an insatiable thirst for travel and adventure. Men, on the other hand, are tied up by business. Many are prevailed upon by their wives to desert business and go.. Young men, too, go in search of culture and adventure.” “That applies also to the younger women. College girls and business women will be seen crowding the promenade decks of all the steamships that leave New York during the next six months.” The ninety-four cruises arranged by the steamship companies thus far this winter have a booking capacity of 25,150 passengers, of which 60 per cent will be women. Five of them will circumnavigate the globe, carrying 1,750 tourists, who will spend sightseeing and for their passage an average of $4,000 each. Four African cruises will carry at least 1,400 voyagers. West Indies Favorite A favorite is a cruise to the Mediterranean. This year twentyseven steamships, carrying 10,800 passengers will leave New York. The West Indies, another popular objective of teh winter traveler, will be toured by 7,200, who will spend an /average og $350.00 each. The United Fruit Company’s flotilla of white ships will make forty cruises to the West Indies, Canal Zone and Central America ports with 4,000 passengers. The total amudnt that will change hands if all the cruises are booked to capacity as estimated by American Express Company officials will be $26,£?0,000, which is by far the largest figure ever reached since winter cruises became the vogue.
