PLEA SOUNDED TO HAIL EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS First Warning of Season Issued; Postal Clerks Want Vacation. Only fifty-four more shopping days before Christmas and time to start preparing those annual gift lists. The first “mail early” warning of the season was issued today by Postmaster Robert H. Bryson. “For some years 'mail early’ campaigns have been made by the post office to avoid the usual last minute rush that swamps every pcstoffice from Maine to California,” Bryson said. “Some relief has resulted, but even more is needed.” Vacation for Postmen Christmas this year falls on Sunday, on which day only special deliveries will be made. The Christmas vacation, however, will be observed by the post office on Monday, with only a morning delivery. Asa means of simplifying delivery of the millions of Christmas greeting cards mailed each year, Bryson urged that all such cards for Indianapolis residents be prepared and mailed*by Dec. 15, or even earlier. Co-Operation Asked Cards mailed at that time will be held until two or three days before Christmas and postmarked with the date of delivery, Cards for out-of-town points will not be held. With the fullest co-operation by the general public, Bryson said, it is hoped that every postal employe will be able to eat dinner with his family Christmas day and the day following. 2,000 Teachers Convene Bit United Press EVANSVILLE, Ind., Oct. 21. Here Is Clever Little Card Trick
BY HARDEEN (Editor's Note—This is the fourth and last of a series of parlor magic by Hardeen, magician, now at Keith’s.) The card manipulator wins by his nimble fingers. He trains them to work with such rapidity that it is impossible for the eye to follow the hand. The amateur will find that card tricks, although thoroughly explained to him, will at first seem impossible, but with practice anyone may reach a state of perfection. A clever little trick which is useful in parlors and small circles and at the same time teaches you how to train the hand is to take thirteen cards and arrange them in such art Oder as to enable you to spell out the cards in sequence from one (ace) to king, simply by holding the thirteen cards in your hand with face downward and removing one card from the top with each letter you spell. Preparation: Arrange the cards in the following sequence: 3871Q64 2 J K 10 9 5 which arrangement will face downward makes the 3 the top card and the 5 the bottom card. Explanation—Commencing at the top you remove one card with each letter you spell, but be careful pot

to disarrange the sequence to the cards previously prepared, viz: O-N-E, one; having removed one card with each letter, you turn over to the fourth card when you pronounce the word one, and it will be found to be the ace. This you will place on the table, as you have no further use for the card, and it if it is returned to the pack it will break up your arranged sequence. Next spell T-W-O, two, and the fourth card will be again turned up and discarded upon the table, and will be found to be the two, or deuce card. Next T-H-R-E-E, three, is spelled and with the pronunciation of £Jae word three, the card is turned up, discarded upon the table and will be found to be the three. Continue in this way to spell F-O-U-R, four; F-I-V-E, five; S-I-X, six; S-E-V-E-N, seven; E-I-G-H-T, eight; N-I-N-E, nine; T-E-N, ten; J-A-C-K, jack; Q-U-E-E-N, queen, and K-I-N-G, king. The trick affords excellent pastime and is very simple if you will only remember not to disturb the sequence of the cards, and we sure not to place the card back into the pack when it has once been spelled. It also lends training to the hand. One soon learns to present the trick with a manner of great mystery.

KEEPS BEAR IN TREE UNTIL HELP ARRIVES Angry Animal and Two Cubs Kept at Bay for Half Hour. By United Press EL PASO, Texas, Oct. 21.—Dr. R. Bailey, Coleman, Texas, reversed the order with a ferocious bear by keeping the animal and her two cubs treed until help could arrive, according to the story told here when Bailey and a party of friends returned from a hunting trip in Arizona. Armed with a long pole, Dr. Bailey kept the angry mother bear and her cubs up a tree for an hour until other members of the hunting party came to his aid.
