MOUNTAIN FOLK NOT SO SIMPLE, 810 CITY FINDS New York Court Stretches Its Moral Code to Provide Happy Ending. Bn United Press NEW YORW, Oct. 21.—It’s a tradition on Broadway that the mountain folk of West Virginia are a simple, upright folk content with one wife, about seventeen children and a few hounds, and that they know little of the wicked complexities of city morals. Mr. James A. Warble, of Martinsburg, was on his way back to the mountains today leaving several New Yorkers convinced that the mountain folk may or may not be simple, but they know what they want. Warble wheezed into town a little more than a week ago in a flivver held together with string and old wire. He had with him a wife and three children. Plenty of Sympathy A kind-hearted policeman who found them huddled in the flivver on a Bronx street, disconsolately munching dry rolls, asked how come. Warble explained that he was a farm hand, that dry rolls were the best he could afford on the $1.25 a day he had earned in West Virginia, and that he had come to the city to make an honest living. The policeman, who makes the high cost of city living look dizzy on the princely income of $4.49 a day, was filled with sympathy. So was a Bronx clergyman to whom the plight of the Warbles was put, as well as the Bronx Lion’s Club. eral hundred dollars was raised and Warble was found a job. Then Archie Dunlap, also of Martinsburg, showed up and disrupted what ought to have been a happy ending. He announced that the wife who accompanied Warble was not Warble’s wife, but Dunlap’s, and that no more than two of the children rightfully bore the name of Warble. Warble and the wife were put in jail on an ugly charge. The children went to the Children’s Aid Society. It all looked like an unhappy city ending, where codes of morals are strict and .the wrongdoer pays heavily. Courts Stretch Code The courts, however, heard the whole story and stretched the code. The wife was handed over to her rightful husband, as well as one of the children, which he identified as his. The clergyman and the Lion’s Club dug into their pockets once more. Dunlap and Mrs. Dunlap were bought tickets home. Warble was bought sls worth of gasoline. By train and auto they started back for the mountains, all unscrambled again, but leaving a clergyman and several Bronx lions slightly scrambled in their ideas about mountain folk.
