OBSERVANCE OF SUNDAY CAUSES ENGLjSNSTRIFE Games and Dog Races Hang in Balance as Fight Is Waged in Press. Bit United Presi LONDON, Oct. 21.—A nationwide discussion as to the manner in which Sunday shall be observed is in progress in England. On one side are those who would ban every kind of pursuit followed by pleasure seekers. These are the people who would follow the customs of the early Victorian era when children were given a religious picture book to look at on Sundays; when all toys were hidden away and the blinds were drawn so that a religiously oppressive atmosphere might be maintained. Chinch was attended strictly at least three times a day and whistling in the street was punishable by law. Pulpit Enters On the other hand there are the Sunday games artlvosates, as they are known, who include among their ranks many of the clergy, who have taken up the cudgels both from the pulpit and through the press. These people declare that Sunday can be observed with all due respect, but without making it a day to be hated as one of distasteful inactivity. They demand music in the parks, tennis, football and other kinds of sports. Racing Questioned Up to quite recently there had been something of a truce between the warring factions. But the fighting has begun with renewed vigor over the question of greyhound racing on Sundays, and so far the honors are even. While such games as football and tennis are permitted in public parks on Sundays; greyhound racing has been forbidden. On this point even sopie of the game-advocating clergymen side with the killjoys. The Rev. D. Morse-Boycott, a prominent London vicar, declares: “The pendulum has swung away from Sabbatarianism, but it may swing too far. We want to pre-

serve our national holy-day. Hence the outcry against dog racing. “Red Tape” Hit “To say that a man is sinning because he plays a game of tennis, rides a buss, mows his lawn, paints a picture, write a book or goes to a cinema on Sunday is absurd. “The foolish outcry of superstitious Sabbatarians whose reverence for the day is so great that they fail to remember the freedom of the Christian and his release from religious red tape, is so clamorous from time to time that it may well lead, to a revolt toward the way of complete week-end secularism. But if the Sabbatrians will keep the Sabbah day strictly, let them do it on Saturday, and leave us ordinary Christian alone to enjoy the brightest day of all the week, with the ordered liberty that springs from sane religion.”ROAD JOBS AWARDED Highway Commission to Pave Three Miles Near Culver.
