1928 PUZZLES DAILY EDITORS OF MID-WEST Farm Belt Undecided on Presidential Material for Both Parties. By EDWARD C. DERR United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Oct. 20.—Editors of daily newspapers in the agricultural belt believe the united support of the Middle West has not yet been won by any presidential aspirant in either major party. More than fifty editors, attending the convention of the Inland Daily Press Association, were interviewed by the United Press. Most of them were editors of thriving dailies in the smaller cities and towns in the heart of the farm belt. They represented the rural and semimetropolitan districts of Illinois, lowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Minnesota rather than the large metropolitan centers. Cal Meant What He Said On only one point did the editors come near agreement. That was that “If President Coolidge were to reconsider and run again, he easily would carry the Mississippi valley States.” But most of these editors believed President Coolidge “meant what he said” when he issued the “Do not choose to run” statement. At this point, all signs of agreement stopped. Prank O. Lowden, former Governor of Illinois; Herbert Hoover, secretary of commerce; Vice President Charles G. Dawes, and Charles E. Hughes, former secretary of State and Republican nominee in 1916, received chief mention among the Republican candidates. Governor A1 Smith, New Yorfk; Senator James A. Reed, Missouri; E. T. Meredith, lowa, and Vic Donahey of Ohio were mentioned most frequently by the Democrats. Lowden Heard Frequently Lowden was mentioned most frequently. That might be explained by the fact that Illinois editors were present in greater numbers than those from other States. A1 Smith is the best known Democrat in Illinois. Senator Reed of Missouri has a large following. lowa editors leaned strongly toward Lowden and Hoover. E. T. riculture, probably will carry the lowa delegation to the Democratic convention. Missourians declared Senator Reed dominated Missouri Democratic circles. Hoover and Lowden seemed to have greatest backing among Republicans. Hoover Is Popular Indiana editors, who have been occupied extensively by factional strife, expressed the belief that both parties would have their difficulties ironed out by next year. Minnesota is deeply interested in farm relief and Lowden and Hoover seem to be the favorites. Governor Smith is mentioned more than any other Democratic possibility. In Wisconsin, Hoover was said to be popular, with Lowden also running strong.

ORDER FORBES RELEASE Former Veterans’ Bureau Chief Must Pay SIO,OOO Fine for Freedom. Bn United Press LEAVENWORTH, Kan., Oct. 20. —Col. Charles R. Forbes, former director of the United States Veterans’ Bureau, will be released from the Federal penitentiary here a week from today if he pays his $lO,000 fine before then. Warden White announced he had received orders from Washington to release Forbes if the fine was paid. Colonel Forbes was convicted of conspiracy to defraud the Government in 1925. He was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary and fined SIO,OOO.
