WISHING TOWN MOURNS AS SEA TAKESSCORES Five Schooners Go Down as Great Storm Sweeps Northern Waters. BY EARL SPARLING LUNEJNBURG, Nova Scotia, Oct. 18— Black is the winter that faces this little sea-going town, center of the Nova Scotia deep-sea fishing industry. For again the sea has claimed its own. Five schooners have failed to tie up to the wharves following the summer fishing season. A hundred men of the sea lie out in the unwalled cemeterjt beyond the Grand Banks. The boats and men were lost in the storm of Aug. 24. For weeks the shore people have hoped against hope. But when September turned into October, when now the last of the fishing fleet has come to anchor in the fishing harbors, the worst is admitted. Four of the lost schooners were from this port, the Joyce M. Smith, the Mahala, the Clayton Walters, and the Uda R. Corkurp. The fifth boat, the Columbia, was from Gloucester, Mass., but of its crew of twenty men, eighteen were shipped from Nova Scotia. One Family Suffers The Mahala is lost with twenty men, eight bearing the name of Knickle. For nearly 200 years the Knickles have sailed and fished off Sable Island. This is the worst catastrophe in the family history. Down at Indian Point a mother knows that three of her sons never will come home, Captain Wilfred Andrews of the Uda R. Corkum, and his two brothers. And it was no mere chance that two other Andrews lads did not sail in the same boat. Five were scheduled to go, but James, one of the elder brothers, demurred. “It is not right that we all of us go on one vessel. If anything happens, it is too many out of one family.” The men of Nova Scotia know this wintry sea that boils beyftnd the Banks. They know' that hardly ever has a fishing season passed without a record of death and disaster. Fate is Mystery ‘The price of fish is the lives of men.” Just what happened to the five boats probably never will be known. A painted spar, a sea chest, a pair of i grey oars—there are only these, kicked up here and there, to tell ■he story. Some probably went to wreck on Sable Island, the greatest of all menaces to the fishing fleet. Wild are the stories told of Sable Island, how it stretches out like an octopus, its tentacles reaching for miles, its live sands shifting with every wind and every log. More than 100 wrecks have been marked up against this grim island, and the fishing men tell of ho v a .-chooner wholly swallowed up in a storm, years later will be thrust up irom these treacherous sands, a weed-clustered wraith. Will Dare Sea Again Thirty-two windows are wearing 'resh-stitched black in Lunnehburg and Shelburne counties and forty orphans are weeping against the ■intry winds, but another spring arid again the fishing fleet will venture forth with new suits of sail, and -their cloth will decorate the ocean even as far down as the Bermudas. A good haul and each boat will "cturn from its next summer’s run with $15,000 worth of fish on board. And, perhaps, the good folk of .■ ,nnenburg will gather again on the quay to pay tribute to those listed missing. Boy, 17, Sentenced r,n United Press LOGANSPORT, Ind., Oct. 18.— PHenneth Ledman, 17, Delphi, was to he taken to the Indiana State Reformatory at Pendleton today to begin serving a term of one to 25 years for robbery. Ledman, arrested at Lafayette following an automobile accident, was returned to Delphi, where he pleaded guilty to robbing a Flora clothing store. / Births Bovs Jacob and Laura Daniels, 1315 S.
