'MODERN SAINT' IS DISCUSSED BY DjUISTLER Pastor Gives His Idea of Big Problem Today. “The name ‘saint’ is a slander today and a word of scorn,” said Dr. Edward Haines Kistler Sunday morning in his sermon in the Fairview Presbyterian Church on “The Modern Saint.” “Why?” he asked. “Because it was once taken to mean the type of character wondrous concerned about saving its own soul, or at least appearing to do so, while the rest of the world might ‘go to the devil,’ for all it cared. Oh, if prayed for them, but its prayers did not seem to mean any effort on its part to make its prayers come true. “Os course, all this is a caricature. When Paul tells the Corinthian Church that crowd of faultfinders, disputing, punctilious worships, that such as they are ‘called to be saints,’ he is issuing the modern challenge to add to their faith such manliness as will make their own virtue spontaneous, and give them somewhat of the heroic in their battle with the world’s ills. The Real Saint “The modern saint is true to the word. He knows no line of distinction between the religious and the secular, so far as the quality of the act is concerned. All experiences are to be lived under the lordship of his Savior. Now, that’s a personal word, and covers all one’s life. A man dare not be a thief, not even as a member of a corporation. He may not limit his efficiency, not even in the name of his pleasures. Late hours and little sleep are unfair to his Master. “Personal Liberty to drink or eat what one pleases has a relation to dyspepsia, hardening of the liver, destruction of the kidneys, or the eating away of his brain. He must be as much in training as any member of any team, and with no exception. All this he must do, thinking of his finest effectiveness toward others. The modem saint will not hinder, but will help all efforts toward removing life’s ills. Being modern, he will joyfully ally him-

self with others for alleviating human distress. There’s the call of ‘the community chest. But he cannot stop with that. Again, he must become part of any super-government whose purpose is the restriction of such veils, indeed, their elimination, as have shown their physical, social, economic, political enmity toward human well-being/' as well in the laboratories as in the history of men. Tbe Choice “He will recognize that it is merely a question of a choice of super-governments, and he is ready to make his choice. He will not be a narrow bigot, but will gladly find himself enlisted shoulder to shoulder with men of any name whose hearts are right. “In short, he is one who in all life, and with all like-minded, joyously strives tb make his Saviour Master and Lord, and thus to bring His kingdom to pass in our whole world and in our time. “The modern saint thus is a clean man, a scientist, a philanthropist, a student, a crusader, an optimist toward his fellowmen though a pessimist against every form of veil, in all an humble worshiper of God,” Dr. Kistler said.
