DE VALERA, 45 TODAY. IS PAID NATIOJfSHONOR Irish Leader Gains in Power Through Years of His > Stormy Career. Bit United Press DUBLIN, Oct. 14. Forty-five years ago today, an Irishman of note was born in New York city. He was named Eamon De Valera, son of a Spanish, father and an Irish mother. Politically speaking, Eamon De Valera came into prominence in the early days of Ireland’s contemporary struggle for independence which culminated in the signing of the Anglo-Irish treaty of Dec. 6, 1921, and by virtue of which the legislative union between Great Britain and Ireland was dissolved, resulting in the constitution of twenty-six out of a total of thirty-two Irish counties into what became known as the Irish Free State. Heads Strong Faction Thereupon, the Sinn Fein Republican party—which had led the fight for Irish independence—split on the question of ratifying the treaty which they themselves had succeeded in bringing about, and became organized into two distinct sections, of which the most important is known as the Vianna Fail and is headed by De Valera. It was as leader of the Fianna Fail that De Valera sprang into further prominence. After he and other members of his party were elected to the Dail, they steadfastly refused for some time to take their seats, pending the removal of the oath of Allegiance to the King of England. Renounces His Decision Later, after the dissolution of the Dail had been pronounced and general elections were called, De Valera created a stir in political circles throughout his country by suddenly reversing his previous decision and announcing his intention of taking the oath of allegiance if elected again, with the avowed intention of breaking it at any time he saw fit. For a time, just before the September elections, De Valera’s decision greatly worried political- forecasters— and candidates causing the widest speculation as to whether or not it would cause the defeat of

Truant Is Bride
The truant officers went out to find out why Dora Dozer of Cannelville, Ohio, wasn’t in school. They found that Dora, though she’s only 15 had changed her name to Dora Jones. She was canning fruit when the officers arrived and said that since she had a husband to look after she couldn’t be bothered with school.
President William Cosgrove, head of the government party, by robbing him of his much-needed majority. Gain New Seats Despite bitter campaigning into which personal, religious, financial and political arguments were frequently injected by all the parties concerned, De Valera and his party —although they were not the victors of the contest—gained a substantial number of seats in the new Dail, and as a result, oath or no oath, the leader of, the Fianna Fail party has enormously increased his popularity. For these reasons a correspondingly greater number of congratulatory messages reached the De Valera home than ever before, preventing the recipient from enjoying a family birthday party undisturbed.
