MARION WIDOW CHARGED WITH SLAYING MATE Mrs. Charles Eckman, 32, Admits Love for Farm Hand, 21. llu United Press MARION, Ind.. Oct. 14.—Mrs. Flossie Eckman, 32, is charged with the murder of her husband, Charles Eckman, 39, a farmer, who died Sept. 24 of strychnine poisoning, in an affidavit filed today by Prosecuting Attorney Edward C. Hays. She is held in the Grant county jail here. Hays announced that the Grant County grand jury probably would be called into special session to investigate Eckman’s death, but said the summons would not be made for some time. Body in Yard at Home Frank Worrick, 21, farm hand, who had been employed by Eckman for three years, returned from a shopping trip to Marion with Mrs. Eckman, Sept. 24 and found the farmer dead in the yard of his home. A post-mortem analysis showed he died of ' strychnine poisoning.' Worrick and the widow were arrested Wednesday and the farm hand was released later, declared to have been found above suspicion. Hays told the United Press he was uncertain whether Eckman had committed suicide or had been administered the poison in his food by someone else. Money Not Motive Money has been eliminated as a possible murder motive, the prosecutor said. Eickman had no life insurance, rented the farm from which he earned his living, and owned only personal property of little value. According to Hays, Mrs. Eckman admitted to him that she was in love with Worrick and had quarreled with her husband over the farm hand’s attentions. Eckman had gone as far as to discharge Worrick several times, but on his wife’s pleas reinstated him each time, Hays said. Mrs. Eckman denied, however, that her intimacy with Worrick had anything - to do with her husband's death.

Young and Gay It was hypnotism, not the sweet strains of “Old Black Joe,” Patrolman W. G. Ennis heard. Marion Springfield, 50, of 840 Bates St., won dismissal of an intoxication charge from Mu-, nicipal Judge William H. Faust on this plea today. Ennis testified he arrested Stringfield when he found him with his arms about a Negro man singing “Old Black Joe.” Ennis testified he was just “cutting up,” exhibiting' his powers of hypnotism.
Sounds Church Cry for Battle on Modernism
Christian Educator Says Present Trend Strikes at Foundation. “I can’t see why evolutionists should chase men up a tree unless it is to give them some reason for their own un-Godly monkey-shines,” said Prof. C. C. Taylor of Phillips University, Enid, Okla., today in an address to the North American Christian convention at Cadle Tabernacle on “The Menace of Modernism.” “If God had been as careless in putting man together as the anthropologists were in assembling the ‘Pitdown man,’ some of us would look a good deal worse than we do. “Modernism strikes at the foundation of Christianity by questioning and discrediting the diety of Christ, the Blood Atonement and the Divine inspiration of the Scriptures. it is eating at the vitals of our Heavenly system. Discredits Story of Rocks “It would explain everything by ifetural law. It decrees ‘There is no miracle.’ It displaced God with matter. Darwinism rejects the Genesis account of the creation of man. “What is to happen to thousands of our young men when cast into our universities 'to be confronted with this teaching? The Rev. Mr.' Taylor discredited the “story of the rocks,” and said schools of modernism attempt “to prove evolution by the theory of geology, and geology by the theory of evolution.” “Young people come home from these universities with a sneer of skepticism. They look upon their elders as ignorant or superstitious and think it’s a pity that lack of education robbed mother and father of seeing their mistake.’ 1,500 Ministers Attend “The damaging agency of modernism is everywhere. In the home. In the papers, magazines. In the universities. And in the pulpits. “I Jtnow preachers who have said they couldn’t present the old-fash-ioned God to the modern mind. I tell you I’m prepared to change the modern mind and not the Bible.” The Rev. Irvin T. Green of Bethany College, W. Va., was the first speaker today, discussing “Training for the Ministry.” The Rev. Fred H. Shaver, Cedar Radips, lowa, was the day’s chairman. The convention is being attended by 1,500 Christian ministers. SUEUN COLE PROPERTY Ask Court to Set Aside Transfer for 8280,000. Bigotry, Futile, View of Protestant Pastors on Dodgers. Other expressions of Idianapolis Protestant pastors upon the K’„Klux Klan movement to bring Senator Thomas Heflin here, in addition to those printed upon Page 1 of this issue, follow; „ The Rev. Floyd Van Keuren, rector of the Christ Episcopal Church, said,'“The very fact that the communication is anonymous immediately dismisses it from all consideration. Any one not willing to disclose his name is not worthy to be heaxa. “I do not mix in politics, but I want to commend The Indianapolis ■Times for its fight for clean government. As for some Senator being the ‘greatest champion of the Protestant cause in the world,’ it’s absurd. Bad and Bigoted Advice Dr. Virgil E. Rorer, D. D., pastor of the Meridian Street Methodist Church, said: “It is bad and bigoted advice and a wise community wili pay,no attention to it.” The Rev. William L Caughran, pastor First Congregationalist Church, Sixteenth and Delaware Sts., said: “I deplore the efforts of anyone to cause religious strife among or between Protestantism,

PLACES KLUXER AT FIRESCENE Witness BrandsA/Vithrow in Rockville Trial. Bu United Press . „ . ROCKVILLE, Ind., Oct. 14. Samuel* F. Withrow stands accused today as the man seen in the glare of flames which consumed the Bridgeton High School building, Sept. 26, 1924. Lawrence Glasee, a State witness in the trial here of -Withrow on a charge of arson, identified the defendant from the witness stand. Withrow, former kligraph of the Parke County Ku-Klux Klan. is also charged with firing the grad -chool building at Bridgeton dur the heated county election in 1924. Under close cross-examination by Charles J. Orbison, Indianapolis, a member of defense counsel, Glasee was told that his testimony on the stand conflicted with that he gave at the State fire marshal’s office in Indianapolis, in 1925. On re-direct examination, Benjamin F. Stephenson, Parke County prosecutor, asked Glasee: “Were you not afraid to testify that it was Withrow?” The witness was prevented from answering when Judge Harry Fine sustained a defense objection. Orbison lost on another objection —a protest against Prosecutor Stephenson referring to Withrow as kligraph of the Klan. In opposing the objection, Stephenson said Withrow’s interest in the 1924 election, during which a charge was made throughout the county that Catholics and bootleggers burned the school buildings, the allegation being made in the hope that it i would affect the result of the election in favor of a slate Withrow supported, was in the nature of a motive for the crime charged to the defendant, The defense, in its opening, statement, announced that an alibi would be offered lor Withrow, alleging that at the time of the fire he was attending Sunday night services at the Baptist church in Bridgeton. Romanism or Judiasm. I don’t know what’s back of this circular. In my, special field, —that of religion,—l am always grieved to see the church and politics mixed. There is no reason why a Roman Catholic shouldn’t hold office,—but not just because he is a Roman Catholic. And the same with Protestants. If it is the purpose of this meeting to engender religious strife, nothing good can conte ibf it.” Doomed to Be Futile f The Rev. George A. Frantz, pastor First Presbyterian Church, Sixteenth and Delaware Sts., said; “This way of trying to meet a serious • situation is so thoroughly discredited that it is time we refuse to take it seriously and begin to laugh.” The Rev. W. R. Montgomery, pastor University Heights United Brethren Church, said: “I am always opposed to anonymous literature- The man behind it should beman enough to sign hi£ name. I think we will getmywhere by persecution, nor by engendering religious strife or discord.” The Rev. Henry T. Graham, pastor Westminster Presbyterian Church, 449 N. state Ave., said 1 : “Such a meeting is doomed to be absolutely futile. If sponsored by anonymous parties who are not men enough to come out in the open it should not be countenanced nor supported by the Protestant church.”

BOOZE PRICES GO SOARING IN FLORIDA AREA / Recent Seizures Put Damper on Smugglers; Miami Least Affected. Bu United Press JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 14. The price of liquor has soared throughout Florida as a |?sult of the recent contentrated campaign of dry agents and the coast ijnard on rum runners and liquor “rings.” Collector of Customs K. R. Bobbitt of Jacksonville, said today that in the last two months imports of rum from the Bahamas and Cuba had dropped to the lowest stage in years. He said scarcely any liquor was coming in direct by boat. Fortunes in whisky and other liquor have been lost by smugglers in the last few weeks. Seizure of $650,000 worth in Key West early this week was the biggest triumph of the campaign. "The Fort Lauderdale district, following a year’s investigation by an undercover agent, was said to be arid as a result of wholesale arrests of county and city police on charges of participating in protection grafts. From every city in Florida except Miami, has come word that whisky has jumped from 10 to 20 per cent in price. Scores of Federal enforcement agents are co-operating with coast guardsmen and State dry agents in' the greatest attempt ever made to end smuggling here. Increased vigilance throughout the State has cut the moonshine supply to almost nothing. State Prohibition Agent W. A. Day said.
