YOUNG CHINESE LOSING HOPE IN RISETOPOWEH Nationalist Party Bickering Severe Blow to New Idealism. Bu United Press PEKIN, Oct. 12.—Setbacks sufferred by the cause of nationalism in China are apt to have a profound effect upon the youthful mind of the country, in the view of a prominent foreign educator here. This man has had years of experience in teaching young Chinese, and he possesses an understanding and sympathetic appreciation of their strong and their weak points. Knowing much of the idealism which has inspired young China during recent years he feels apprehension concerning the results of any severe blow to this idealism. Attitude Is Cynical “It is altogether too easy to become discouraged concerning the outlook for China,” he said. “The usual psychology here is cynical. Yet the Nationalist movement has brought out undreamed-of idealism on the part of Chinese students all over China. “Now certain setbacks are appearing, after months of steady and comparatively united effort which seemed due to reach an early victory. I am afraid that if the Nationalists allow personal jealousies and differences to split their movement it is going to be hard and discouraging blow to the youth of the land.” Such events as the departure from Hankow of Mme. Sun Yat-Sen and the continued bickerings and negotiations of various factional leaders among the Nationalists are regarded with alarm of many northern Nationalists sympathizers who had hoped that north China would be speedily captured by the Nationalist armies. Deplore Borodin’s Lo& Said another foreigner, not in the educational work, but for some time a close observer of Chinese students: “The young Chinese are enthusiastic one moment and deeply disheartened the next. Occasionally one finds a more steady and reliable sort, but for the most part they are of such character that disappointment hits them very hard. “Moreover, it must be considered as a fact—though from all points of view an unfortunate fact—that Borodin, the Soviet high adviser, was pushed into a position of prominence which he himself probably did not desire., This position he filled simply because the young Chinese of the Nationalt movement were not so resourceful as he. So, in losing Borodin, young China is
STOMACH UPSET Get at the real cause. That’s what thousands of stomach sufferers are doing now. Instead of taking tonics, or trying to patch up a poor digestion, they are attacking the real cause of the ailment—clogged liver and disordered bowels. Dr. Edwards’ Olive Tablets arouse the liver in a soothing, healing way. When the liver and bowels are performing their natural functions, away goes indigestion and stomach troubles. Have you a bad taste, coated tongue, poor appetite, a lazy, don’t-care feeling, no ambition or energy, trouble ■with undigested foods? Take Olive Tablets, the substitute for calomel. Dr. Edwards’ Olive Tablets are a purely compound mixed, with olive oil. Know them by their olive color. They do the work without griping, cramps or pain. All Druggists. Sciatic-Neuritis The sciatic nerve, situated at the back of the hip joint is frequently the subject of Neuritis, giving rise to the painful disease Sciatica. The symptoms are intense pains which shoot down the thigh to the foot, often aggravated by walking, and with painful points along the course of the nerve, very tender to the touch. The trouble is a very obstinate one and does not readily respond to ordinary treatment. It takes more than the usual pain sedative even to alleviate the pain. The best way to get relief from the persistent nerve racking pains and Neuritis is to get a bottle of Allenrhu Special Formula JNo. 2, which comes in capsule form Take them as directed and in about 24 hours you should be able to notice that they have considerably reduced, if not almost banished, all pain and soreness. Continue faithfully and in a reasonable time you should oe able to work and rest in comfort once again. All druggists keep Allenrhu Special Formula No. 2 in stock all the'time and sell lots of it.—Advertisement.
Lowden and Daughters
Frank O. Lowden, wartime Governor of Illinois, regarded as a strong presidential possibility, is pictured here with his two daughters. Lowden withheld his final “yes” from more than 2,000 farmers and business men who recently visited him at his farm near Oregon, 111., asking him to declare his candidacy, but he has declared that “no man would run from the presidency.”
apt to lose more than it now realizes.” While new crises will put young China to the test and may conceivably bring out unexpected strength, most foreign and Chinese observers alike appear to feel that young China is hardly ready for severe tests as yet. TRUCKS PAY AT 109,000 RULES White Mileage Figures Show Motor Value. How far can a motor truck run profitably? Nearly 5,000 business men and industrial concerns have filed signed statements with the White Company that 11,256 White trucks and busses have run 100,000 miles or more each. Os these, 117 have passed the 500,000 mile mark! “These mileage figures, which The White Company has been publishing annually for a good many years, furnish a real index to the value of motor transportation. Trucks and busses are different from passenger cars: they are run strictly for profit and they have to earn their way. No business man v/ill run a truck 100,000 to 500,000 miles if it is losing money. That is the real measure of quality, for trucks that will run such distances continue

to earn profits, long after their cost has been written off the books.” With 3,232 more Whites on this year’s 100,000 mile list than in 1926, the increase is slightly over 40 per tent. This single year’s gain exceeds by 870 the total number of trucks and busses in the 100,000 mile class in 1923. Totals for the last five years demonstrate the steady worth of the White mileage record—2,362 in 1923; 4,195 in 1924; 6,019 in 1925; 8,024 in 7926, and 11,256 in 1927.

URGES DRIVING CLASSES Bn United Press HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 11.—Instruction in the operation of automobiles should be a part of the course of study of every school in the country, according to Richard Haldeman, president of the Pennsylvania Motor Federation. Haldeman declares that when a
The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) is proud to be a “big business.” But it is proud of its size only because it is the direct result and the tangible measure of its usefulness. The people of the Middle West are responsible for the size of this Company. They have encouraged its growth by demanding its products in everincreasing quantities. The size of the Company has increased in proportion to the service required of it. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) has been working for years with one definite, conscious purpose—to serve to the best of its ability, the people of the Middle West. Its singleness of purpose and its faithfulness to that purpose have been recognized and appreciated. Constantly and steadily demands for its products have multiplied. This is the best proof of appreciation that could be had. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) operates in a highly competitive field. People buy its products because they know they will get full value for their money. People go out of their way to find its Service Stations because they know they will receive the attention of men who not only are skilled to serve them, but who are intensely interested in serving them well. A feeling of mutual respect has grown up between this Company and the people of the Middle West. By a dependability that never varies, by an honesty of purpose that never changes, the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) has proved itself worthy of trust. By a growing demand for its service, the public has shown its appreciation. This, in turn, has created an increased sense erf responsibility on the part of the Company. It is a big job the Standard OH Company (Indiana) has to do today. It must fuel and lubricate millions of motor cars and a fast growing number of airplanes. Industries in ten great Middle Western states must be supplied with petroleum products. Wheels on the farms, in the homes and the factories require many highly specialized lubricants, which have been developed to fill the many various requirements. Hundreds of oth‘er products must be manufactured to fill hundreds of other human needs—and to share the costs of production with the major products making low prices possible. Manufacturing is not all of the job. This Company has built up a vast system of distribution reaching all comers of the Middle West —making its service as convenient to the farmer in a remote rural section as to the city person. It is a big job the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) has to do today—serving the 30 million people of the Middle West. Work that is worth the doing! All of the 29,000 employes of the Company feel the same way about it. Only their best will do! Standard Oil Company ( Indiana ) General Office: Standard Oil Building 910 So. Michigan Avenue, Chicago
