INDEPENDENTS MAY TIP OVER G. O.J\CASTLE Meeting May Bring Out New Candidate; Norrfs and Borah Boosted. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, Oct. 11.—Revival of the old independent movement in the Republican party as a protest against present candidates for the 1928 Republican presidential nomination is being discussed openly by a group of western senators here. A meeting is to be held this week to talk about what can and should be done. The invitation list includes Senators Borah, Idaho; Norris, Nebraska; Brookhart, Iowa; Frazier tukye, North Dakota; LaFollette ana Blaine, Wisconsin, and Shipstead, Farmer-Labor, Minnesota. The group is dissatisfied with the decision reached by Republican national committemen here last week to work for renomination of President Coolidge if possible and for Vice President Dawes as second choice. It also is displeased because Herbert Hoover and Charles E. Hughes are considered the leading candidates by some Republican chiefs. Want Farm Bloc Man % The group desires nomination of a. farm bloc man, and some of the instigators of the movement are not convinced they should support Frank O. Lowden of Illinois, advocate of the McNary-Haugen bill. Ostensibly the movement is centering now around Norris "as the man to cary the bloc’s banner in the convention, but some see possibility that Borah later may capture the major portion of its strength. Norris has been discussed as a pospective candidate for some weeks. In Nebraska there has been serious talk of pledging the State delegation to him and he stands in a fair way to have the Wisconsin delegation, too, if he wants it. He has been considered an able leader in the movement which brought the late Senator Robert M. LaFollette into the 1924 campaign as an independent candidate, and probably would inherit most of LaFollette’s old strength. Norris Not Excited r The Nebraskan, however, says he does not take his candidacy seriously and does not believe he has a chance for the nomination. He met with Borah and some of the others upon his arrival here Saturday and agreed to meet again when the remaining members of the group arrive here next week. Borah’s apparent participation in the discussions has caused considerable surprise. Off and on during the last few years he has worked with the group in individual legislative campaigns, but he usually has been considered “more of a party man” than the others. He is expected to be the favorite sen of Idaho in the next convention and it is possible the group could build up a formidable bloc of votes behind him at the next convention. BUTLER STUDENTS WIN RADIO AUDITION CONTEST Chance Won by Pair to Contest for National Prize. Miss Ocie Higgins of Lebanon and Joseph Perrine, 528 Oxford St., Butler University students, won the Seventh Indiana district Atwater Kent audition Monday night at the public library. Miss Higgins, a soprano, in April won the national soprano contest held by the National Music Federation at Chicago. Perrine is a tenor soloist at the Downey Avenue Christian Church. A series of auditions will be held until a national contest to be broadcast over station WGN, Chicago, decides a national winner. CITY PARK COPS MERELY SMILE AT SHORT SKIRTS Not Part of Their Work to Cejisor Women’s Clothes / Indianapolis park policemen need not be cantankerous about the length of women’s skirts like that Washington, D. C., park cop, who told the lady to pull her dress down, according to George Morgan, assistant park superintendent. “Park police here are instructed to prevent immorality. As long as the girls do not scoot around on benches and let their skirts creep up to the point where it is offensive to common decency the park policeman is unconcerned,” said Morgan. “We try to be -wisible about such things, keeping in mind that a perfectly nice girl may be wearing just terribly short skirts these days.”
