DRIVERS’ ALIBI FOUNDFLIMSY Blame for Accidents Laid to Careless Autcists. The old alibi about the accident being caused by “loose gravel” does not hold water, according to results of a survey made by Maintenance Superintendent A. H. Hinkle, of the State highway department. Hinkle, whose forces operate throughout the State, ordered his men to make an accurate check on the actual cause of accidents reported. Oftentimes an interview with the driver brought forth such statements as “I tipped over on account of the loose gravel,” or “There is a bad curve at that place.” Not content with these explanations, Hinkle’s men made inspection of the spot where the mishap occurred. The curves proved to be mild affairs for the most part and without exception, well marked. “We find from our survey that accidents are caused largely by reckless driving, despite the alibi,” Hinkle asserted. “Many occur at the most harmless places on the highway and when you look at the spot you cannot but wonder how the driver managed to get the machine in such position.” SUGGEST WEEK-END TRIP TO BLOOMINGTON Autumn Colors on Hillside Assure Scenic Treat. The Hoosier Motor Club suggests a week-end trip to Bloomington, the home of Indiana University and located in tire famous Indiana limestone region. Autumn colors are now flaming on the hillsides and the trip is of unusual scenic interest. The route is as follows: Leaving Indianapolis go south on Meridian St. to the 1900 block; bear right and follow State Rd. 37 through Martinsville and Dolan to Bloomington. Distance iiity-two miles. The road is paved.
FUND DRIVE PUSHED More Speakers Wanted for Community Campaign. Call for speakers on Community Fund matters is increasing daily, according to a report today by Miss Winifred Brown, secretary of the Fund’s speaker bureau. More than 130 talks before clubs and churches in Indianapolis are scheduled for the next few weeks. The Community Fund’s new motion picture “The Man Who Woke Up,” likewise is in heavy demand, says Miss Brown. Showings of this film are being made from three to six times daily. Mrs. Walter S. Greenough at noon today spoke on the work of the Community Fund at the meeting of the Altrusa Club at the Columbia Club. Mrs. Myrtle Roper of the Planner House addressed the Parent-Teacher Club at School 64, and Mrs. Julia Reed, president of the Alpha Home, will speak on work of the Cofmunity Fund tonight at School 79.
