Stupidity in Legal Maze on Marriage BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Reno, they say, having been the mecca for those wanting divorces, is now a turncoat and has become the city of hasty weddings. California has anew marriage law, populaly called the “anti-gin marriage measure,” making it compulsory for persons wanting to marry to give three days’ notice, filed and printed, of their intention. So Californians are eloping to Nevada to escape this trouble. Our senseless way of doing things is perfectly exemplified in this condition. You can be legally married in one State and an adulterer in another. You can be a divorcee in one State and a married woman in anothe. Just travel over the country and you can find a law that suits you. There are many who believe that we should put down all bars when it comes to getting married. Marriage, they say, is after all merely a legal contract and should not be taken seriously. But even legal contracts have to go through some form before they are made. Men who go into business partnerships under the law must notify the public of their alliance and intentions. Shall we enter marriage more carelessly? Even though it is not, marriage should be something more than a legal contract. The foundation of society, the protection of the home, the maker or destroyer of unborn children, it cannot reasonably be re-

garded as something of no consequence. Make divorce easier, is the cry. That may be all right, although it is a question that cars be argued the other way, but certainly we should make marriage a little harder. Something so easily attained is bound to be held in disrespect. Make it more difficult to get married and people will be likely to stay married longer. > And what a cynical name for the California law—the “anti-gin marriage measure.” What picture does that bring to. you? Boys and girls so drunk they know not what they are doing. Silly children taking a vow they have no intention of keeping. If we are going to hold marriage thus, then let’s not swear any oaths to be true until death. Let’s sign a document and at least he bonest. For when people -no longer hold their vows as sacred ties they need some moral sustenance.
