YOUTH BRANDED SLAYER FLEES JAIL ATMUNCIE Elmer Andres Uses Keys Left in Lock by Sheriff’s Wife. Bu Time* Svecial MUNCIE, Ind., Oct. s.—Elmer Andres, 20, identified as the slayer of a night watchman at Lawrenceburg, Ohio, is at large today after walking out of the belaware County jail here early Tuesday night. Keys left in the lock of the jail receiving room door by Mrs. Harry McAuley, wife of the sheriff, were obtained by the prisoner by pushing aside wire netting near the lock. Authorities believe that anew automobile belonging to G. A. Umbarger, reported stolen shortly after Andres’ escape, was used by him in fleeing from the city. Two companions of Andres, Raymond Bell, 17, and Ralph Richardson, 23, made no attempt to escape. All three were awaiting removal to the State reformatory at Pendleton, having been sentenced following pleas of guilty to an attempt to rob a filling station here last Thursday. Socially prominent, Lorraine Defren of Newton, Mass., is happy because she expects to fly to the honor of being the first woman to obtain a pilot’s license in her home State. Already, she has six hours aloft to her credit. nati, Ohio, who solved the Don Mellett murder case at Canton, Ohio, identified Andres as the slayer of William Yeager, night watchman of a dance hall at Lawrenceburg, killed while bandits were attempting to rob slot machines in the hall. Andres and his companions admitted, authorities say, they were in an auto shots fired from which wounded a Cincinnati detective during an attempted hold-up of an auto accessories store. Bell and Andres are under indictment at Cincinnati for twenty-six robberies. Andres is believed to have been one of the two men caught by Patholman Michael O’Connor at Indianapolis while attempting to break into a drug store, both escaping after one struck the officer in the abdomen, using a revolver as a club.
