Late School Opening Handicaps Eleven; Tangle With Vincennes Today. GUARDS WEAK POINT i Central Coach Well Fortified With Good Reserves. BY DICK MILLER Times Stall Correspondent DANVILLE. Ind., Sept. 30.—Laboring under the handicap of a late school opening, Coach Russell Cook had his Central Normal football squad out for a stiff drill here on Thursday night, preparing for the second game of the season against Vincennes here today. School does not open until next week and some of last year’s regulars and several new men are expected to turn out at that time. The scarcity of men was, perhaps, the reason for Danville’s poor showing against Wabash last week. Six Gaps Left When the curtain rang down on the grid season last year two guards, a center, two ends and a fullback had played their last college games. Their loss left big gaps, gaps which the Little Giants took advantage of last week. Although the backfield is considered rather “hot” at Central this year, good backs count for naught when they are stopped before reaching the line of scrimmage. Several fine-looking freshmen already have reported to Cook, among them seven Hoosiers and a Minnesota lad. They are Grenda, Johnson and Morris of La Porte; Miller, Dell and Fancher of Sheridan; Reidel of Arlington, and Hill of Minnesota. Snappy Set of Backs The snappy back field mentioned starts off with Argensen of Sharon, Pa., at quarter. Darnell, all-State high schooler from Sheridan, and who is taking care of one of the half back positions, can replace Argensen at the signal barking position, if necessary. At the other half, Cook has Captain Franklin, well known in Indiana collegiate circles for his balltoting ability. A merry battle is being waged for the full back post. The job was vacated by the giant Carpenter, graduated last June. Bratton, a veteran, is finding plenty of competition from young Dell. It is a real contest for the position and Cook may alternate the men. Most of the back field men are good passers and Franklin and Darnell are fine punters. A wealth of back field reserve strength is found in Spencer, Reidel, Fancher, Acres, Padgett and Bailiff. Walls and Dean will take care of the end positions. Woods, Selebee and Pruitt are good reserves. Fight for Tackle A big Indianapolis boy, Richardson. who should have been heard
Rose Eleven Set for Battle Here Bu Times Special TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Sept. 20. Rose Poly will be “on edge” for its battle with Indiana Central College’s football team in Indianapolis Saturday. The Fighting Engineers have not slopped their scrimmage workouts because of rain during the last few days, and the men have been drilled until after dark each day. The Engineers are expecting the hardest kind of a battle at Indianapolis, for they know Coach Good has developed the best team that ever represented Indiana Central University. The Rose coach shifted his back field Thursday in the final scrimmage.
