The plaint of Legionaires was “yfiiat is Paris without a cane?” Eight hundred veterans, many of them from the Twenty-Eighth Pennsylvania division, complained that after paying sl4 apiece for the trip to Verdun, they were obliged to return to Paris without seeing the Romagne cemetery, where their buddies lay.
