■LL STREET Rtocks STAGE f EARLY RETURN Railroad Issues Mostly Strong: Steel Opens ‘ High, but Drops.
Average Stock Prises
Average of twenty industrials Tuesday was 196.97, up .59. Average of twenty rails, 140.19. up 1.61. Average of forty bonds was 98.02, up .01. U’j United Press NEW YORK, Sept. 21.— Recovery In stocks led traders to take profits in early dealings today and the list presented an irregular appearance. Trading was moderately active. Railroad issues, with the exception of New York Central, were strong; sugars were steady; oils firm and coppers barely steady. Several industrial favorites sagged more than a point. United States Steel common opened at 154%, up %, but later dropped back to its previous olose. General Motor? issues were both lower, the old stock losing 2la points to 268. Texas Gulf Sulphur was down IVh at 7816, while American Water Works rose 1% to 63. N. Y. Central New York Central, which gained fcharply in Tuesday’s session sold off l?i to 16614 at the opening, but later rose to 16714. Baltimore & Ohio, C. & 0., New Haven, and Western Maryland issues advanced. International Nickel was bid up snore than 2 points to 72%. Some selling took place in early dealings on the basis of freight traffic figures for the week ending Sept. 10, which showed a decrease in loadings of 35,526 from the same week last year. On the theory this shrinkage failed to bear out reports of seasonal revival in business, the bear crowd launched a drive at the opening of pivotal stocks. Special Issues continued strong, however, with Goodrich reaching new ground for the year. International Nickel also made a considerable advance. Resistance Displayed Stocks displayed impressive resistance to another selling movement in the late morning. Pressure converged largely on General Motors new stock. Offerings appeared to come from traders desiring to be otit of the stock before the “when issued" contracts are to be taken up Friuay. Steel common also had a quick dip, but rallied almost immediately. Renewed interest was displayed in the utilities, notably in the group enjoying electric Bond and Share management, which includes American Power and Light, Electric Power and Light and American Foreign Power Corporation. American Power and Light was an tutstanding issue in this group, advancing 2!i points to 68%, anew high for the year. American Power and Light is selling around 13 times its earnings of $5.17 a share on the average number of shares outstanding June 30.

In the Sugar Market
(By Thomson ySt McKinnon) NEW YORK. Sept. 21.—Thera Is nothing ln this morning news to suggest any material change ln the position of the augar market today. Everything seems to depend on the speed with which the Cuban Government can arrange for laW3 authorizing restrictions of the next crop. In the meantime, Immediate requirements ln the refined market seem to -iave been provided for. but because of the momentary nnsettlement there was a disposition on the part of holders to shade their 3 1-16 cents price, but refiners are showing no interest above 3 cents. I believe the market will continue firm, however.

CORN DECLINES WITH RISE IN TEMPERATURE Yellow Grain Opens 5 Cents Under High Close; Oats, Wheat Also Off. By United Press CHICAGO, Sept. 21.—Corn futures broke sharply early today with an opening 4% to s',i cent under Tuesday night’s high close. The drop occurred as a result of rising temperatures in the belt today and failure of frosts last night to be as severe or wide-spread as had been predicted. Wheat opened IV* to ITt cents lower, and oats Vs to 1% cen*s off. Liverpool wheat canles were lower this morning due to rains overnight in the Argentine. This, together with favorable Canadian ' weather and higher temperatures in the American Northwest, which increased the movement of grain to market, accounted for lower opening prices. While there was frost lest night in parts of the com belt, it was not as damaging as had been predicted. Frost was reported in northern Indiana and Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, but not in lowa. There was no news in oats this morning this grain continued to take its tone from wheat and com. In the Cotton Market
(By Thompson & McKinnon) NEW YORK. Sept. 21.—There was the biggest kind of selling on the close yesterday, too much enthusiasm about the frost prediction. I know what I am talking about when I tell you the trade Is taking cotton steadily on declines. That’s business. The fast advance Tuesday was hardly justified, but I was glad to see it because It showed there isn’t anything hanging over the market to prevent advancing prices when something substantial develops. J.OVE, LIQUOR BLAMED * IN SHOOTING EPISODE Man at Hospital After Bullets Fly in Downtown Terre Haute. By Times Special TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Sept. 21. William Hebec is in a hospital with a bullet in his abdomen and Clifford Donham is a prisoner facing charges of assault and battery with intent to kill, the climax of what police term a love and liquor feud. The shooting occurred on a street in the downtown section of the city. Police said Donham had asked them several months ago to aid in breaking up an affair between his wife and Rebec. The wounded men and his assailant are said to be members of rival liquor gangs, A
