INDIANA SNOWS • FALL DROP IN EMPLOYMENT Department of Labor Reports Iron and Steel Work Fairly Active. The seasonal recession in industry and employment continued during August, the United States Department of Labor reports. There has been a slowing down in building throughout the State. Employment In the iron and steel industry continues on a fairly satisfactory basis. One of the largest contributing factors too the unempl6yment situation in this State is the parttime operations of practically all coal mines. It Is very difficult for the released coal miners to secure employment in other lines. A large number of unskilled workers are being absorbed on road building. Harvest requirements are absorbing many of the unemployed common laborers. INDIANAPOLIS—The demand for all classes of labor has fallen off considerably due to the summer season. Some classes of mechanics In the metal Industries are scarce. All plants in this city are running. EVANSVILLE—There is a surplus of workers in a number of industries at the present time, but the outlook for increased employment this fall is good. FT. WAYNE—AII plants are running, but, In spite of this there is a general surplus of labor. SOUTH BEND. Industrial District. In■luding La Porte—A surplus of common bor exists in this district. All plants re operating, but not all are on fulltime schedules. ELKHART—Band Instruments plants are operating part time. affecting 1,250 workers. Railroad workers who were released in July have been re-emploved. Several plants are operating overtime and expect to continue on this lndiflnitelv. Sufficient farm labor available for present demands. MICHIGAN ClTY—There is a general surplus of labor; however, the temporarily released workers in most cases can secure employment in other lines. All plants are running on full-time schedules. TERRE HAUTE-CLINTON—There is a surplus of coal miners, but this surplus is not as large as in July. A large coal mine at Clinton recently resumed operations, giving employment to about 300 men.. An overall factory at this point is operating part time. At Terre Haute a steel mill closed, affecting 100 workers. A large hotel and a normal-school library are under construction at Terre Haute. The farm-labor supply exceeds the demand. CULUMET, INCLUDING GARY. EAST CHICAGO, WHITING AND INDIANA HARBOR—Slight surplus of workers in this district* particularly noticeable in the mechanical trades. Plants at Gary are operating at about 65 per cent of capacity. Surplus of workers in oil industry at WhitXnderSON Employment conditions close to normal, except for a slight surplus of common labor. Agricultural activities and road construction are absorbing most of unemployed. KOKOMO Shortage of millwrights, cabinet workers and finishers. BLOOMINGTON—SurpIus of common lahor. . All plants running on full-time schedules. Stone mills operating overtime. LOGAN,SPORT —Surplus of workers in nearly all lines. Anew industry started operating early in August, employing about ten people, this number to be gradually increased. " ELWOOD—The supply and demand of workers Is even. With the exception of a plant, manufacturing shovels and tools, „L plan , t ,l ars operating a sheet and tinDl S&JSHL, runnhig part time. MUNClE—Employment prospects are n? o v.i. S * < ? we Paring is in progress •it xnls time. Since the first of the rear *4,000.000 worth of building has* been unwav’. Slight surplus of common la‘n any line.
