Outstanding among events in the radio world this week-end is the inauguration of the Columbia Broadcasting System’s network, operated by the Columbia Phonograph Broadcasting System, Inc. WOR, Newark, has added studios in New York City, and will be the new chain’s key station. Fifteen other radiophones are affiliated with this hook-up, this list having been published in this column Thursday and with it the weekly schedule of the new tie-up. (The two hours beginning at 1 Sunday afternoon and again from 7 to 9 p. m., will be filled with music of . all sorts, provided by more than 100 talented artists. Symphonic orchestras, male quartets, jazz orchestral, string ensembles, soprano, contralto, baritone and tenor soloists, masters of the piano, violin, trumpet and cello all will be heard. Some of these are well known to radio owners, others will make their wireless debut. A musical phantas? depicting reminiscences of one who has been abroad lor the summer, known as “The Vacationist’s Return,” is the first feature, following the Voice of Columbia aWthe opening. Then comes “The Spirit of the Woods,” a musical setting for Joyce Kilmer’s “Trees,” which closes the afternoon period. “The King’s Henchman,” outstanding among American operas, is the real attraction of the day, opening the evening program. A variety hour, replete with latest hits and ballads of recent years form the concluding hour at night. The Columbia system is prepared to make an imposing .start, thereby setting a high mark to strive for at all times. Fishing the Air joins in with all listeners in welcoming Columbia.

The Urban quartet will present for the first time in several years the operetta, “Haddon Hall,” at 7:15 p. m. Saturday. The story of the lovely heroine, Dorothy Vernon,

is familiar to everyone. Tune in WOR, Newark. Allen McQuhae will radiocast the first of his series of concerts which will bring to a close the summer Atwater, Kent programs. His first selection, opening at 7:15 p. m. Sunday, is a charming example of Franz Schubert’s song writing. This week’s program follows: "Who Is Sylvia?” Schubert “1 Heard You Singing” / Coates "I Love the Dewy Dawning” .Egan "Kathleen Mavourneen” Crouch “Passing By” Purcell "Cota* Into the Garden, Maud" Balfe "Irish Names” Turzey A twenty minute group of Negro spirituals taken from the works of Coleridge Taylor, renowned Negro compose#, will be included in an hour of sacred music radiocast on the Red nefwork at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Goin’ Home” and other favorites are included in the program. LovAs of Beethoven music will enjoy the half houc recital of Godfrey LuOlow, Australian violinist, to be broadcast through the Blue network at 8 Sunday evening. The recital includes five well known selections from Beethoven and one each from Bach and Debussy. Those who like something different will find it in the program from WNYC, New York, at 6:30 Saturday afternoon when Lawrence Metcalf, the pioneer whistler of the air, will be heard.
