WORK STARTED ON TAX SLASH Treasury Prepares It Data for Congress. By United Pres* WASHINGTON, Sept. B.—With Secretary of Treasury Mellon again on duty after a vacation, Treasury employes today began gathering data for the Administration’s use in its tax reduction recommendation to Congress this fall. Officials, however, are in a quandary on what taxes to cut. They contend that a reduction of between $100,000,000 and $200,000,000 is feasible—but no more. Treasury officials indicate the country is not quite as prosperous now as it was a year ago and this would mean a reduction of revenue in the face of mounting governmental expenses. This, they contend, should be considered in calculating any tax reduction. Corporations, they indicated, can continue paying the corporation tax, hence a cut along this line is not favored. MYSTERY ATTACK ON CITY MAN IS PROBED Man Badly Beaten About Head, Picked Up on Street. j} Police today investigated a mysterious attack on a man giving his name as Furman Calder, 23, Brevort Hotel, held at city hospital. He was badly beaten about the head. Calder was found injured at Illinois and Ohio Sts., by Patrolman Prindle. His car was stopped at Meridian and Thirty-Fourth Sts., by two men with drawn Vevolv^rs. One of the men struck him on the head with the and knocked him unconscious. His companions, including Eloise, his wife, Bob Movill and James Austin, drove away and left him he said. He was forced to walk to town. Police were unable to find his wife or the two men. NEGRO SHOT BY DEPUTY AT FRANKLIN DIES HERE Denied Stealing Chickens, but Said He Was Waiting for Whisky Load. Harrison Willett, 40, Negro, who gave both Louisville, Ky., and Twenty-Fifth St. and Shriver Ave. here as his addresses, died at the city hospital detention ward today ffom a bullet wound in the abdomen, fired, police said, by Deputy Sheriff Carl Losey, Franklin, Ind., Tuesday night. Losey sent Willett to the hospital and said he found him and another Negro stealing chickens. Willett denied stewing chickens, but declared he and mis companion I were waiting for a load of whisky to be delivered to them near Franklin. CORN BORER SPREADS TO SEVEN TOWNSHIPS Anew county and seven more townships are declared corn-borer infested by State Entomologist Frank Wallace, bringing the new total to fifteen counties in the northeast section of the State and 124 townships. Marshall County Is the latest under the ban. New townships are: Huntington, in Huntington County; Penn, in St. Joseph; Etna and- - in Kosciifsko; Concord, in Elkhart; French, in Adams, and German, in Marshall.
